About the role
You will architect and deliver scalable, production-grade data platforms that power private markets research and analytics for Preqin at BlackRock. This role owns the end-to-end lifecycle of critical data products, from initial discovery and technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing production support. You will translate complex business objectives into robust technical solutions while maintaining a relentless focus on reliability, performance, and operational maturity. The position requires deep collaboration with product, analytics, and business stakeholders to ensure engineering efforts directly support data-driven decision-making across the firm. Your work will enhance transparency and efficiency for institutional investors, strengthening BlackRock's position as a leader in integrated public and private market solutions. You will leverage Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities to build intelligent workflows that derive new insights from complex private markets data. Ultimately, you will set a high bar for engineering excellence and play a key role in shaping the technical foundation of BlackRock's private markets data strategy.

What you'll do
- Architect and implement scalable software solutions that process private markets data, owning the full stack from data ingestion through to user-facing analytics and production support.
- Design and build reproducible, testable data workflows that enable advanced analytics, incorporating validation, monitoring, observability, experimentation, versioning, and robust deployment pipelines for AI and Machine Learning use cases.
- Define and lead architectural standards for data platforms, making strategic technical decisions that balance innovation with reliability, security, and long-term maintainability.
- Partner closely with product managers and business stakeholders to translate strategic priorities into clear engineering roadmaps, ensuring alignment between technical delivery and measurable business impact.
- Act as a technical leader and subject matter expert, elevating engineering practices across data management, governance, and cloud-native development within the Preqin Derived Data team.
- Communicate complex technical trade-offs and recommendations to senior stakeholders in clear, business-focused language, facilitating informed decision-making at all levels of the organization.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, data scientists, analysts, and product leaders to deliver high-impact solutions that meet the needs of institutional investors and private markets clients.
- Lead, mentor, and develop software engineers, combining hands-on technical contributions with people management to build a high-performing, inclusive, and continuously improving engineering culture.
- Drive operational excellence by implementing monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes that ensure high availability and performance of critical data services.
- Explore and evaluate emerging technologies and methodologies, translating research into practical improvements that enhance data quality, processing efficiency, and user experience.
- Establish best practices for data testing and validation, ensuring that analytics and AI/ML models are built on reliable, well-documented, and reproducible data foundations.
- Champion a culture of learning and experimentation, encouraging the team to iterate quickly, measure outcomes, and refine solutions based on real-world feedback and data.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, and operate scalable production-grade software systems for data processing, with expertise in Python, SQL, and modern data platforms.
- Hands-on experience with modern software engineering practices and tooling, including version control, CI/CD, automated testing frameworks, containerisation, and AI-augmented software development workflows.
- Experience working in cloud environments such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure, including infrastructure provisioning and automation using Infrastructure as Code.
- Strong understanding of data validation, testing strategies, code quality practices, and the ability to independently drive technical solutions from design through delivery.
- Experience supporting advanced analytics and AI/ML use cases, complemented by a rigorous, data-driven approach to experimentation, evaluation, and technical decision-making.
- Excellent collaboration, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across engineering, product, data science, and business teams.
- A proactive, curious, and resilient mindset, with a demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, explore new technologies, and continuously improve systems and ways of working.
- Experience leading, mentoring, and developing software engineers while maintaining hands-on technical credibility and a commitment to engineering excellence.
Nice to have
- Experience working with financial market data, investment analytics, or private markets datasets.
- Experience designing and building software and/or data platforms in financial services environments or other regulated environments.
- Experience productionising statistical or quantitative models.
- Experience supporting AI/ML lifecycle management, including model versioning, experiment tracking, evaluation, serving and deployment pipelines.
