Sr. Program Manager, Business Systems & Tooling
Job description
About the role
You own the critical interface between Betterment's Business Systems & Tooling (BS&T) organization and its cross-functional stakeholders, translating complex business needs into clear system and tooling strategies. You will embed deeply within sales, service, and advisor workflow teams to understand their day-to-day realities and upcoming priorities. This position requires fluency in both business and technical languages so that you can build trusted relationships with each group and translate ambiguous problems into well-scoped plans. You will proactively surface opportunities for automation, improvement, and best practices rather than waiting for issues to arrive as support tickets. This role is responsible for ensuring that BS&T initiatives are aligned with the realities of multiple lines of business and that the team's work remains visible, prioritized, and clearly communicated. You will act as a steady coordinator and translator across vendors, internal teams, and executive stakeholders to keep complex initiatives moving forward.
Key facts
What you'll do
Partner with BS&T engineering leads and architects to translate stakeholder needs into scoped, documented tasks with clear success criteria and acceptance standards.
Embed with stakeholder teams across Betterment's lines of business, attending their regular meetings and building a working knowledge of their processes, tools, and persistent pain points.
Own and communicate the BS&T roadmap, making prioritization decisions legible to stakeholders and aligning planning rhythms with company-wide cadences.
Maintain a continuously updated view of each stakeholder group's upcoming priorities and map them to BS&T capacity and upcoming initiatives.
Run intake, backlog grooming, and status communication processes so that the team's work and the reasoning behind decisions remains transparent.
Act as the first point of contact for new stakeholder requests, gathering context, clarifying underlying needs, and framing the problem before committing resources.
Stay current on the sales technology landscape, evaluating emerging tools, integrations, and best practices for fit with Betterment's existing stack and long-term strategy.
Support vendor assessments, procurement, and renewal processes by coordinating with Finance, Legal, Security, and other relevant partners as needed.
Help stakeholders evaluate build-vs-buy tradeoffs with a clear-eyed view of total cost, integration complexity, maintenance burden, and long-term operational impact.
Proactively surface opportunities for tooling improvements, automation, and best practices, bringing ideas to stakeholders instead of waiting for problems to become tickets.
Balance urgent stakeholder priorities against high-value quality-of-life improvements to ensure compounding wins do not get perpetually deferred.
Leverage data and qualitative feedback to assess the impact of existing tools and workflows and identify areas for iterative improvement.
Serve as a communication hub between business teams and technical teams, ensuring that requirements, constraints, and tradeoffs are clearly articulated on all sides.
Own end-to-end coordination of specific initiatives, tracking dependencies, risks, and timelines to ensure successful delivery and stakeholder satisfaction.
Champion better meeting practices, decision documentation, and knowledge sharing so that stakeholders and BS&T teams can work more effectively together.
