Sr. Mobile Engineer

About the role

You will own the critical first impression new customers have of Betterment through the mobile application that guides them through the most important life events in their financial journey. You will be responsible for building and maintaining the high-quality features our customers engage with every day while raising the bar on what great mobile experiences look like. This role involves partnering with Full Stack Engineers, user experience designers, and product managers to craft consumer-facing applications that people are proud to share with friends and family. You will lead medium-to-large scale initiatives that solve complex problems making saving and investing simple for hundreds of thousands of users. Your work will directly impact how customers save to buy a house or plan for retirement, ensuring the experience remains delightful, intuitive, and trustworthy.

What you'll do

Lead medium-to-large scale initiatives, partnering with teammates and adhering to software development best practices in order to ship high quality software continuously and iteratively.

Collaborate with our Product & Design teams to develop delightful experiences that guide our customers on their saving and investing journey.

Work alongside Fullstack Engineers to help ensure our features and application grow with our business while remaining performant and secure.

Teach and learn in a collaborative environment where you share knowledge with new and junior engineers and grow your own talents through mentorship from leaders.

Create efficiency by maintaining clean code, rigorous testing, and pragmatic programming to help customers save time and money.

Collaborate with purpose in small groups with other talented thinkers to figure out how to make Betterment's application even better.

Contribute to an environment of open communication where engineers feel empowered to share ideas and take initiative to solve problems that contribute to achieving company objectives.

Work with people who care, where half of the team is made up of engineers who believe everyone at Betterment is an engineer with their own tools.

Champion the hybrid work model by committing to four days per week in the NYC office during standard business hours.

Utilize your experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, and React Native to build native iOS and Android experiences that delight users.

Leverage familiarity with underlying iOS and Android platforms to ensure optimal performance, security, and user experience.

Apply expertise in Flutter where applicable to expand our cross-platform capabilities and accelerate feature delivery.

Support the financial wellness solutions that include retirement planning and 401(k) offerings for small and medium-sized businesses.

Requirements

Experience building applications in JavaScript/TypeScript and React Native development with familiarity with the underlying iOS and Android platforms.

Demonstrated experience shipping mobile applications that serve hundreds of thousands of users at scale.

Strong understanding of mobile architecture, performance optimization, and security best practices.

Proficiency in native iOS development using Swift or Objective-C and native Android development using Kotlin or Java.

Comfortable working in an agile environment with iterative development cycles and continuous delivery.

Ability to mentor and grow junior engineers while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

Commitment to writing clean code, maintaining rigorous testing standards, and following pragmatic programming principles.

Willingness to adhere to Betterment's hybrid work policy, including four days per week in the NYC office.

Nice to have

Experience with Flutter is nice to have.

Practical notes

This role is based in New York City and follows a hybrid work model requiring four days per week in the office.

The position is full-time and eligible for a company incentive bonus in addition to the base salary range.

New York City candidates only, remote work is not available for this position.
