What you'll do

• Serve as the primary technical authority for the Study Lifecycle and Process Execution teams, crafting systems that align with Benchling's product and business goals across various scientific workflows.
• Design and implement solutions for complex, undefined challenges, addressing system architecture, backend models, APIs, and sophisticated frontend user interfaces tailored for regulated scientific environments.
• Lead significant initiatives spanning multiple quarters, translating intricate scientific and regulatory requirements into clear technical plans and incremental delivery milestones.
• Utilize technical decision-making as a strategic asset, balancing existing platform capabilities, intentional technical debt, and long-term adaptability.
• Enhance the impact of the Applications division by establishing engineering direction, raising quality and architectural standards, and influencing technical decisions beyond your immediate teams.
• Provide technical leadership through code reviews, architectural advice, and mentorship for engineers at various experience levels.
• Work closely with product management, design, and other stakeholders to transform customer and scientific needs into effective technical solutions.
• Explore and assess opportunities to incorporate AI and large language models (LLMs) to optimize lab operations, standard operating procedure (SOP) execution, and time-series analysis for scientists.
• Take complete ownership of critical features, overseeing all stages from planning and development to deployment, maintenance, and monitoring.
• Contribute to the growth and scalability of the team by enhancing tooling, refining engineering processes, and participating in interviewing, hiring, and onboarding new talent.

Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience, showcasing a trajectory of increasing scope and impact.
• Proven experience as a technical lead on significant projects involving multiple engineers over extended periods.
• Strong expertise in developing backend systems and APIs for cloud-based web applications, with the capability to work across the full stack when necessary.
• Demonstrated ability to design scalable and reliable architectures that fulfill business requirements while ensuring long-term maintainability.
• A track record of independently defining and driving initiative-level work that influences multiple teams and shapes a product area or division.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical designs and align other engineers on implementation strategies using technical expertise.
• Proven experience mentoring and developing other engineers, enhancing team standards in areas such as testing, performance, and maintainability.
• A strong desire to learn about life sciences; prior knowledge in biotech is advantageous, but a genuine enthusiasm for learning is essential.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with regulated environments (GLP/GMP) or experience with laboratory/manufacturing software.
• Previous experience working in a startup or fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of modern software development methodologies and practices.

• Proficient in React
• Experienced in Python
• Familiar with PostgreSQL
• Interest in AI and LLMs, particularly in exploring and evaluating their applications
