About the role
You are a Staff-level Application Platform Engineer joining a mission-driven team focused on modernizing insurance claims processing. In this role, you will own the design and evolution of the internal platforms that power developer productivity and system reliability at Assured. You will work closely with product and infrastructure teams to turn complex claims workflows into scalable, secure, and maintainable software solutions. Your daily work will involve abstracting common patterns, removing bottlenecks, and building tools that enable other engineers to move quickly with confidence. You will champion security and reliability while ensuring sensitive data remains protected at every layer of the stack. This is a hands-on role where your technical decisions will have company-wide impact and shape the future of developer experience. You will be expected to lead projects end-to-end and collaborate across teams to establish best practices that elevate the entire engineering organization.

What you'll do
- Investigate and resolve performance bottlenecks across the stack to ensure smooth, high-throughput systems.
- Design and implement platform services that abstract common patterns and make building delightful products easier.
- Enhance and expand internal tooling to enable the next generation of Assured products and workflows.
- Optimize infrastructure for reliability, security, and scalability under rapid product growth.
- Champion data protection and access controls to ensure sensitive information remains secure at all times.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and codify best practices that benefit all engineers.
- Own projects end-to-end, guiding ideas from initial design through deployment and observability.
- Drive efficiency and resilience in systems that orchestrate large-scale, ML-driven decision-making on critical claims data.
- Elevate developer experience by crafting intuitive interfaces and robust platforms for product teams.
- Continuously monitor, measure, and improve platform performance to support evolving business needs.
- Partner with security and product teams to align platform capabilities with compliance and risk requirements.
- Mentor and influence technical direction across teams to establish coherent architectural standards.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and translate them into platform improvements that deliver measurable impact.
- Act as a trusted advisor to engineering teams, helping them navigate complex technical constraints and tradeoffs.
Requirements
- Bring 8+ years of experience in platform or backend engineering, or equivalent hands-on expertise.
- Demonstrate deep knowledge of TypeScript and proficiency with Node.js, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, and AWS.
- Show a proven track record of leading projects independently from architecture through production deployment.
- Communicate clearly and influence technical direction across distributed teams and stakeholders.
- Build secure, reliable, and high-performance platforms with measurable outcomes in safety and uptime.
- Apply a craftsmanship mindset, writing clean code, embracing thoughtful design, and fostering collaborative teamwork.
- Make strategic technical tradeoffs with company-wide implications, balancing speed, risk, and long-term maintainability.
