About the role
Apptronik is seeking a Senior Manager, Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting to serve as the foundational technical accounting expert within the finance organization. The successful candidate will report directly to the Controller and play a pivotal role in navigating the company through complex accounting challenges inherent in scaling a robotics business. This position is instrumental in establishing and maintaining rigorous accounting policies as Apptronik prepares for a future public market debut. You will be responsible for bringing deep expertise in U.S. GAAP to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance. The role requires a proactive approach to solving intricate accounting issues that arise from the development and commercialization of advanced robotic systems. You will be a key architect of the financial infrastructure necessary to support sustainable growth. Key facts
What you'll do
- Serve as the primary U.S. GAAP authority, conducting in-depth research and applying complex accounting standards to the specific operations and transactions of a growing robotics company.
- Exercise technical ownership over the accounting for revenue recognition involving hardware, software, and services, as well as manufacturing and inventory, capitalized software, research and development costs, stock-based compensation, equity and financing arrangements, leasing agreements, international operations, and strategic transactions.
- Author and review high-quality technical accounting memoranda, formal accounting policies, and detailed financial statement footnote disclosures to ensure clarity, accuracy, and compliance.
- Lead the technical accounting components of the external audit process, coordinate with external auditors and third-party specialists, and manage the preparation of documentation for SEC reporting and IPO readiness.
- Partner closely with Finance, FP&A, Legal, Operations, Engineering, and executive leadership to analyze and provide timely accounting guidance on new product launches, customer contracts, and strategic financing initiatives.
- Act as the main liaison and point of contact for external auditors, valuation experts, tax advisors, and other specialists, ensuring effective communication and alignment on technical accounting matters.
- Own and enhance the processes related to monthly and quarterly close activities, specifically focusing on technical accounting entries, reconciliations, and the development of scalable controls and procedures.
- Provide strategic support to the CFO and Controller by contributing to special projects, analyzing complex accounting impacts, and preparing materials for board presentations and other high-level communications.
- Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the company's business models to ensure accounting policies reflect the commercial substance of transactions.
- Drive the establishment of robust internal controls and documentation standards to support financial reporting integrity and audit efficiency.
- Evaluate and implement appropriate accounting treatments for transactions specific to the robotics industry, including hardware development and deployment.
- Contribute to the analysis of capitalization policies and the accounting for software development costs within the context of hardware and software integrated products.
Requirements
- Possess a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited institution.
- Hold a current Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation and demonstrate current knowledge of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Bring a minimum of 7 or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- Include at least 3-4 years of prior experience gained at a Big 4 or national public accounting firm.
- Show significant technical accounting and financial reporting experience gained in an industry setting, having functioned at a Manager or Senior Manager level.
- Have practical, hands-on experience with revenue recognition for multi-element arrangements, stock-based compensation, equity and financing transactions, and software capitalization.
- Exhibit a proven track record of researching, analyzing, and applying complex and evolving accounting guidance to real-world situations.
- Demonstrate strong written communication skills, capable of drafting precise technical accounting memoranda and detailed financial statement disclosures.
- Possess the ability to distill complex financial and accounting concepts into clear explanations for both financial and non-financial audiences within the organization.
- Show meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Nice to have
- Direct experience within high-growth technology, robotics, manufacturing, AI, hardware, or R&D-intensive environments.
- Specific exposure to inventory accounting, capitalized manufacturing costs, and other intricate hardware-related accounting issues.
- Prior experience supporting companies during IPO readiness, SEC reporting filings, or other significant capital markets transactions.
- Background working with lessor accounting standards or hardware-as-a-service/usage-based commercial models.
Practical notes
This is a direct hire position. The compensation package includes competitive salary, 401k participation, comprehensive health benefits, and paid time off. The work arrangement is hybrid, with the expectation of working from the north Austin location.
