What you'll do

• Design and refine database architectures and data models to meet the specifications outlined in customer contracts, working closely with the broader Appian team.
• Assess current database structures to identify incompatibilities, discrepancies in data types, and potential challenges related to migration before transitioning to cloud solutions.
• Convert legacy stored procedures, triggers, views, and functions into compatible programming languages such as PL/SQL or SQL, rewriting the necessary logic to ensure functionality.
• Revise hardcoded SQL queries within application source code to ensure compatibility with the new database engine.
• Create ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to cleanse, transform, and migrate legacy data into the updated application framework.
• Establish, implement, and manage enterprise database clusters to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
• Optimize database objects for improved performance and create indices on tables as needed to enhance query efficiency.
• Integrate both existing and new database components into Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to improve code reliability and consistency.
• Set up source control for database architecture code, stored procedures, and ETL components to maintain versioning and collaboration.
• Develop complex data scripts for automated functional and performance testing to ensure the integrity and efficiency of database operations.

Requirements

• Educational Background: A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a related technical field is required.
• Professional Experience: At least 5 years of experience in data engineering, with a strong focus on designing, planning, and implementing tables, views, stored procedures, and functions.
• Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of both relational (RDBMS) and NoSQL database technologies, along with expertise in query languages such as SQL, MQL, and CQL.
• Database Design: Proven track record in designing, planning, and implementing new stored procedures, views, tables, and functions based on specific business requirements.
• Security Clearance: An active DoD Secret Clearance is required, or the ability to obtain one. U.S. Citizenship is necessary for projects within the Public Sector.
• Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time annually for customer-related engagements.

Nice to have

• Certifications: Possession of cloud and security certifications such as AWS Certified Database Specialty, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, CompTIA Security+, or relevant certifications from Oracle or Microsoft is preferred.
• Migration Experience: Demonstrated experience in migrating complex schemas across various database engines, such as transitioning from Oracle to PostgreSQL/MariaDB or SQL Server to MySQL.
• Programming Knowledge: Familiarity with programming languages like Python, Java, C#, as well as tools such as XML, JSON, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, and RHEL8 is advantageous.

Skills & tools

• Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, AWS Cloud, Snowflake, and Data Bricks.

Practical notes

The compensation for this position ranges from $125,000 to $250,000 USD, influenced by factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, and current market conditions. In addition to the base salary, this role may also be eligible for a government clearance differential and a discretionary bonus based on both individual and company performance.
