Senior Software Engineer
Job description
.
About the role
Amplitude provides an AI analytics platform used by over 4,700 customers to optimize digital products and user experiences. The Developer Experience team creates the foundational SDKs that allow developers to integrate and trust our platform across various environments. This role focuses on the iOS pillar of that strategy, ensuring the SDKs deliver robust, high-performance analytics and replay capabilities. You will guide the technical vision for the iOS ecosystem while balancing long-term platform health with immediate delivery needs. The position requires deep expertise in Swift and Objective-C to build abstractions that simplify complex functionality for downstream consumers. You will serve as the architectural authority for iOS, influencing industry-standard patterns for reliability and maintainability. Collaboration with cross-functional partners ensures the SDK aligns with product goals and customer expectations. Your work will directly impact how developers perceive and interact with Amplitude's data platform on Apple devices.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Lead the architectural direction and long-term evolution of the iOS SDK platform, defining boundaries and contracts.
- Manage the development lifecycle of core iOS SDKs, including Analytics and Session Replay, with a rigorous focus on reliability and performance.
- Act as the primary iOS technical authority and evangelist, supporting internal teams working on Experiment, Guides, and Surveys initiatives.
- Design, publish, and maintain shared APIs, infrastructure, and abstractions that provide consistent integration patterns across multiple SDKs.
- Partner with Product Management and Customer Support to translate user needs into stable, versioned SDK capabilities and migration paths.
- Facilitate cross-team technical reviews and architectural decision-making, establishing best practices for interface design and testing strategies.
- Enhance the end-to-end developer experience by improving documentation, testing frameworks, sample applications, and integration tooling.
- Implement observability and debugging workflows within the SDK to provide high-quality telemetry for diagnosing integration issues.
- Optimize binary size, memory footprint, and energy impact to ensure the SDK performs efficiently within diverse consumer applications.
- Coordinate release planning, versioning, and changelog management to minimize friction for engineering teams adopting new SDK releases.
- Build and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines that enforce quality gates, automate testing across device matrices, and streamline publishing.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing code reviews, technical guidance, and hands-on coaching on iOS development standards.
Requirements
- Hold a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field, or demonstrate equivalent practical experience through a portfolio of shipped work.
- Bring 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a minimum of 4 years focused specifically on iOS development in production environments.
- Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Swift and Objective-C, including fluency with modern iOS frameworks, runtime behaviors, and development tooling.
- Show a track record of designing public-facing APIs that prioritize backward compatibility, stability, and clear semantic versioning strategies.
- Exhibit strong ability to debug complex, intermittent issues across a wide matrix of iOS versions, device models, and system configurations.
- Apply deep knowledge of iOS concurrency models, including GCD, async/await, and runloop mechanics, to prevent threading issues.
- Manage memory manually in Objective-C and leverage Swift's ownership model to eliminate leaks and retain cycles.
- Utilize performance profiling instruments to identify bottlenecks in CPU, memory, and energy usage within mobile contexts.
