Senior Electrical Designer
Job description
USA.
About the role
This role delivers advanced electrical design for aerospace, medical, and automotive programs within a large global engineering organization. You will solve complex power systems challenges while operating within a structured, mentorship-driven framework.
Designers shape how products look and feel. Designers create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and polished visuals. They test ideas with users and iterate on feedback. Design work spans research, interaction design, and visual design. Collaboration with product and engineering happens daily. Design decisions are judged by outcomes such as usability, conversion, and customer satisfaction. Most design teams keep a living design system to keep products consistent.
Key facts
What you'll do
Derating, radiation tolerance, and reliability considerations guide component selection for space applications to meet strict quality and longevity goals. Hardware bring-up and validation testing receive support, and electrical designs integrate with spacecraft power and avionics subsystems to verify system compatibility.
Requirements
A BS Degree in Electrical Engineering is required from an accredited institution. Experience on aerospace or defense projects that adhere to rigorous quality and compliance standards must be demonstrated. A minimum of 5 years designing electronic circuits using industry ECAD design tools is necessary in professional settings. Analog circuit design expertise, including isolated and non-isolated switched-mode power supply designs, common and differential mode power filtering, active filter and amplifier design, high-side FET drives, and GaN FET implementations, must be shown. Proficiency with OrCAD X, Allegro X, and Altium Designer for schematics capture and PCB layout tasks is required. Hands-on experience with SPICE-based simulation tools is needed to model and verify circuit behavior before implementation. Experience working with SMPS, Load Switches, Op-Amps, and Comparators in real-world circuits is necessary. Familiarity with FPGA, microcontroller, or microprocessor-based control and telemetry interfaces is required for system integration. The ability to travel up to 10% on average is required to support project and client needs.
Practical notes
Onsite presence may vary based on project needs and team arrangements. Compliance with drug screening and federal contractor regulations is mandatory for employment. for exact expectations and procedures.
Typical interview steps
Design interviews usually include a portfolio review, a design exercise, and a team conversation. Candidates present past work and explain their process and decisions. Some loops include a live design challenge. Communication matters as much as the visual output. Portfolios are strongest when they show the problem, the constraints, and the iteration, not just the final screens. Interviewers also watch how you take feedback.
Good to know
The role focuses on power electronics and control systems within aerospace, medical, and automotive contexts. You will use OrCAD, Allegro X, and Altium Designer as primary design and layout tools. The position operates within a global technical organization that emphasizes mentorship and structured career development. SPICE-based simulation guides verification and validation activities for designs. Projects may involve radiation tolerance and reliability requirements for space-grade components.
Questions to ask
Worth asking in any interview: how the team measures success, who the role works with daily, what the onboarding looks like, and what the company is trying to achieve this year. Asking what past hires did well is a strong final question. Keep the list short and pick the questions that matter most to you.
Career growth
Design careers grow from junior to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some designers move into design management or design operations. Specializations include UX research, interaction design, and brand design. Cross-functional influence grows with seniority. Senior designers are expected to influence product strategy, not just execute visuals. Building a habit of user research strengthens any design career.
