As a , you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all employees and stakeholders within the organization. Your primary focus will be to develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies and procedures that comply with local regulations and industry standards. This position is crucial for fostering a culture of safety and minimizing risks associated with operations in the mining sector. You will work closely with various departments to promote safe practices and ensure that all personnel are trained and equipped to handle potential hazards.

- Develop and implement comprehensive health and safety programs tailored to the specific needs of the mining industry, ensuring compliance with local regulations and international standards.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and audits to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions to mitigate risks effectively.
- Collaborate with management and employees to foster a culture of safety, encouraging proactive participation in health and safety initiatives.
- Organize and deliver training sessions for employees on health and safety practices, emergency response procedures, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Investigate accidents and incidents to determine root causes and develop strategies to prevent future occurrences, documenting findings and recommendations.
- Maintain accurate records of health and safety activities, including training sessions, incidents, and compliance audits, to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies and external agencies to stay updated on health and safety legislation and best practices, ensuring the company remains compliant.
- Monitor and analyze health and safety performance metrics, preparing reports for management to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Act as a point of contact for health and safety concerns, providing guidance and support to employees and management on safety-related issues.
- Lead emergency response drills and ensure that emergency plans are effectively communicated and understood by all employees.
- Participate in the development of safety budgets and resource allocation to ensure the necessary tools and training are available for effective safety management.
- Stay informed about industry trends and advancements in health and safety practices, integrating new knowledge into the company's safety programs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in health and safety management, preferably within the mining or heavy industry sectors.
- Strong knowledge of local and international health and safety regulations and standards.
- Proven experience in conducting risk assessments and safety audits, with a track record of implementing successful safety programs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence employees at all levels.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail in identifying hazards and developing solutions.
- Certification in health and safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) is highly desirable.
- Proficient in using safety management software and tools for reporting and tracking safety performance.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong leadership qualities.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and work in a dynamic environment.

- Experience in the mining industry or similar sectors is a significant advantage.
- Familiarity with environmental management systems and sustainability practices.
- Additional certifications in emergency response or first aid training.

Practical notes
This position is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is offered on a contract basis. The role may require occasional travel to various operational sites.
