About the role
The Regulatory Compliance Manager, China will own the end-to-end regulatory compliance execution for Airwallex's licensed non-bank payment institution operations in mainland China. This position requires the hire to monitor and interpret updates from the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), and other PRC authorities on a daily basis. The role involves preparing regular reports and internal briefings to guide compliance strategy and ensure alignment with licensing terms. The manager will collaborate closely with Product, Commercial, Operations, and Legal teams to embed compliance requirements into products and processes. They will provide timely compliance guidance to address operational risks and remove regulatory blockers for the business. The position supports business expansion and license-related projects, including license upgrade initiatives and regulatory assessments. The ideal candidate will act as the key liaison between Airwallex and regulators, coordinating communications and managing relationships with the Public Affairs team. This role demands hands-on execution in a fast-moving environment where adaptability, rigor, and proactive risk mitigation are essential.

What you'll do
- Support the CN Regulatory Compliance Officer in overseeing regulatory compliance and risk control for mainland China operations.
- Monitor updates related to mainland China payment systems, cross-border RMB flows, foreign exchange controls, and financial regulations to ensure immediate awareness.
- Prepare regular reports on regulatory trends and internal briefings to guide compliance strategy and decision-making.
- Collaborate with Product, Commercial, Operations, and Legal teams to embed compliance into products and processes from the initial design phase.
- Provide timely compliance guidance to address operational risks and prevent potential violations.
- Draft, review, and update internal compliance manuals, policies, and control documents to reflect current requirements.
- Align internal documents with evolving PRC laws, regulations, and licensing requirements to maintain legal consistency.
- Conduct implementation reviews and routine compliance checks to verify adherence to internal controls and external rules.
- Support product development, business expansion, and license upgrade initiatives with compliance assessments and documentation.
- Perform compliance assessments and prepare documentation to meet regulatory standards during audits or examinations.
- Manage payment licenses, regulatory filings, periodic reports, and record-keeping activities to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Coordinate with the Public Affairs team on regulator communications and industry association engagements to represent Airwallex professionally.
- Liaise with global stakeholders in the Airwallex group to share China-specific regulatory updates and implications.
- Align group-wide compliance standards for cross-border operations to maintain consistency across jurisdictions.
- Deliver internal compliance training and identify risks to enhance awareness across the organization.
- Proactively mitigate regulatory threats through routine checks and continuous monitoring of the operating environment.
Requirements
The candidate brings prior payments compliance experience within China, specifically within the financial services sector. They understand the licensing framework for non-bank payment institutions under PRC rules and how it applies in practice. They can interpret changes in payment and foreign exchange regulations and translate them into actionable compliance steps. They communicate requirements clearly to product and commercial stakeholders to ensure proper implementation. The candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple compliance tasks under tight deadlines. Practical notes
The role operates during standard Shanghai office hours and may require travel within the region for regulatory activities or meetings. A valid work visa authorized for China employment is required for this position. The compensation for this role is an annual figure of 45,000 USD based on 2024 figures.
