About the role
The AI Research and Development Group at Agile Robots is seeking an intern to help build an agentic planning system for robotic manipulation. You will work with LLMs and VLMs to help robots reason through and execute complex, multi-step tasks in both simulated and physical environments. In this capacity, you will own the design and implementation of core framework components that translate high-level intent into executable robotic behaviors. You will be responsible for developing the architectural scaffolding that allows agents to plan, adapt, and recover during manipulation tasks. Your work will directly influence how robots perceive, reason about, and interact with the physical world through structured decision-making. You will collaborate closely with researchers and engineers to iterate on novel approaches to task execution and autonomy. This role provides a unique opportunity to contribute to research that bridges the gap between theoretical agentic AI and real-world robotic systems. You will play a key part in shaping the tooling that empowers the next generation of intelligent robotic assistants.

What you'll do
- Architect the agentic planning framework that orchestrates long-horizon robotic manipulation workflows.
- Engineer multi-agent collaboration strategies that leverage VLMs and LLMs for sequencing, delegation, and task planning.
- Investigate and define structured task representations that capture the nuances of intricate, multi-step manipulation procedures.
- Build closed-loop monitoring mechanisms and autonomous recovery systems that preserve operational stability across extended runs.
- Design and execute experiments on both physical and simulated robotic platforms to validate framework behavior under diverse conditions.
- Analyze experimental outcomes and synthesize insights that drive iterative improvements to agentic performance and reliability.
- Contribute as a co-author to academic research papers, helping to communicate findings to the broader scientific community.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to align framework development with product and research objectives.
- Implement robust interfaces that enable seamless integration of perception, planning, and control modules within the agentic stack.
- Document architectural decisions, protocols, and APIs to ensure clarity, maintainability, and reproducibility for future work.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Master or PhD program focused on AI, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related discipline.
- Possess practical experience deploying or building agentic systems that utilize LLMs or VLMs for reasoning or task execution.
- Demonstrate strong Python programming skills specifically for robotics and AI development in research and production contexts.
- Show a solid understanding of robot control or task planning and how logical constructs translate into physical movement.
- Exhibit the ability to document research findings and write clearly in English for academic publication and technical reporting.
- Maintain a proactive approach to problem-solving, showing initiative in identifying bottlenecks and proposing technically sound solutions.
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, communicating complex ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Adhere to rigorous standards for code quality, experimental methodology, and reproducibility in research deliverables.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with ROS or ROS2 and robot simulation software such as Gazebo or Isaac Sim.
- Familiarity with robot learning techniques, including sequence modeling approaches or imitation learning methods.
- Prior experience contributing to or co-authoring academic research that has been published or presented at conferences or workshops.
