About the role
Become a key member of the Payment Gateways team, which is part of Adyen's Core Payments division. In this role, you will be responsible for developing the infrastructure that facilitates seamless in-store payment experiences on a global scale. Your work will involve designing robust systems capable of managing high volumes of concurrent transactions while maintaining reliability across a wide array of physical terminals, mobile devices, and merchant systems. This position requires you to orchestrate intricate payment workflows by integrating various internal systems and contributing to the architectural vision for innovative payment solutions.

What you'll do
- Develop, test, and deploy high-performance Java applications that are integral to the global payment infrastructure.
- Collaborate closely with Data and Platform engineering teams to create services that are highly available and resilient to faults.
- Advocate for engineering best practices and actively participate in discussions regarding architectural decisions and the product roadmap.
- Establish, implement, and track performance metrics to identify and address system bottlenecks effectively.
- Engage in cross-functional collaboration with global product managers and engineers, and occasionally interact directly with merchants to gather insights into their requirements.
- Design and implement scalable solutions that can handle increasing transaction loads while ensuring minimal latency.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues that arise within the payment processing systems.
- Contribute to the documentation of system designs and operational procedures to facilitate knowledge sharing within the team.
- Participate in code reviews to ensure high-quality code and adherence to best practices.
- Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and support to help them grow in their roles.
- Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously enhance the team's capabilities.
- Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the team.
Requirements
- A minimum of 8 years of practical experience in backend development, specifically with Core Java, web services, and SQL/PostgreSQL.
- Proven track record of technical leadership and experience in mentoring less experienced engineers.
- Deep understanding of the principles of high availability, fault tolerance, and low-latency system design.
- Proficient in modern API frameworks, including REST and OpenAPI, along with knowledge of API security best practices.
- Ability to assess new technologies and effectively communicate findings during architectural discussions.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with an emphasis on incorporating diverse viewpoints.
- A customer-centric approach that balances technical expertise with an understanding of merchant business objectives.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically under pressure.

- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of payment processing systems and financial regulations.
