Senior Research Data Scientist
Job description
About the role
You own rigorous research on ambient AI impact in healthcare, shaping how data insights steer product strategy and evidence. You translate messy clinical realities into structured understanding while maintaining startup speed and scientific integrity.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design intake workflows that transform raw clinical conversations into research-ready evidence.
Construct data infrastructure enabling rigorous evaluation of AI impact on clinical outcomes.
Review findings through causal analysis, ensuring metrics reflect real provider and patient needs.
Ship insights that clarify adoption patterns and heterogeneity in real-world health system settings.
Partner with engineering teams to embed auditable AI summaries within linked evidence frameworks.
Interrogate assumptions inside evaluation frameworks, proposing alternatives that serve clinicians.
Map conversational data into structured clinical practice characterizations using empirical methods.
Guide product decisions by turning complex analyses into clear narratives grounded in measurable impact.
Requirements
You hold expertise analyzing healthcare data from real-world deployments and customer feedback sources.
You build and maintain data pipelines that turn production conversations into reliable research assets.
You evaluate models using offline assessments and human judgment validation against automated frameworks.
You quantify measurement error, selection bias, and causal effects within observational health system signals.
You collaborate across roles, aligning data engineering, science, and commercial teams on shared standards.
Responsibilities in detail
You will conduct quantitative evaluations of Abridge models and products using data from real-world deployments, offline evaluations, and customer feedback. This work involves building and maintaining the data infrastructure the research team depends on, developing and stress-testing metrics, and conducting causal and descriptive analyses. You will operate at startup pace while upholding research rigor, ensuring evaluations capture what truly matters to clinicians and patients, not only what is easiest to measure.
You will develop and maintain deep familiarity with Abridge data assets, including production data, user feedback signals, and clinical conversation data. In this capacity, you serve as the team's authority on data provenance, structure, and limitations for research studies. You will build, extend, and maintain the data pipelines that support internal and external research efforts, transforming raw data sources into clean, well-documented, research-ready datasets. Collaboration with Data Engineering and platform teams ensures that the data needed for research is accessible, reliable, and well-understood.
The Strategic Research team at Abridge has two primary functions. It designs and conducts rigorous research studies investigating the impact of ambient AI as an intervention in partnership with collaborating health systems. It also conducts health care research that leverages Abridge data and supports external research efforts. You will work closely with Science and Engineering teams on core model evaluation. Every partner-facing research initiative must meet the highest standards of rigor, credibility, and strategic value.
You will translate complex analyses into clear, compelling narratives grounded in data so that research insights inform product decisions, guide strategy, and help establish rigorous evidence for the real-world impact of ambient AI in healthcare. This includes conducting quantitative evaluations of models, assessing construct validity, characterizing measurement error, and surfacing selection bias in observational signals such as user ratings and feedback. You will design and execute analyses that address core research questions, including validating automated evaluation frameworks against human judgment, characterizing heterogeneity in adoption and usage trajectories, estimating causal effects of ambient AI on clinical and operational outcomes, and extracting structured characterizations of clinical practice from unstructured conversation data.
You will build deep familiarity with existing metrics and evaluation frameworks used at Abridge and beyond. You will interrogate underlying assumptions and propose alternatives where appropriate. Your work will ensure that evaluation efforts align with the needs of both clinicians and patients. By partnering with research scientists, you will explore complex, messy real-world healthcare data. You will maintain the data infrastructure, develop and stress-test metrics, and interrogate the assumptions embedded in evaluation frameworks.
Practical notes
Office hours in NYC; travel may occur; visa sponsorship details remain unstated.
Team context
You join a growing team of practicing MDs, AI scientists, PhDs, creatives, technologists, and engineers. The company was founded in 2018 with the mission of powering deeper understanding in healthcare. Abridge transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time with deep EMR integrations. Using Linked Evidence and auditable AI, the company maps AI-generated summaries to ground truth. Offices are located in the Mission District in San Francisco, the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and East Liberty in Pittsburgh.
