Staff Product Designer
Job description
Staff Product Designer
About Abridge
Abridge was founded in 2018 with a clear mission: to power deeper understanding in healthcare. Our core technology is an AI-powered platform built specifically for medical conversations. It enhances clinical documentation efficiency and allows clinicians to dedicate their attention to patient care. The platform captures patient-clinician dialogues and converts them into structured clinical notes in real-time. It features deep integrations with electronic medical records systems. Abridge utilizes Linked Evidence and a proprietary, auditable AI architecture. This approach enables the company to map AI-generated summaries back to source data, fostering provider trust and verification. The organization is a leader in responsible generative AI deployment for healthcare, establishing industry standards for clinical tools. The team is composed of practicing clinicians, AI researchers, PhDs, creatives, technologists, and engineers. They work together to empower people and make healthcare make more sense. The company maintains offices in the Mission District of San Francisco, the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and East Liberty in Pittsburgh.
About the Role
The Staff Product Designer will redefine the interaction between clinicians and technology. This position involves redesigning the future of healthcare delivery. The goal is to create experiences that recover clinicians' time, lower cognitive strain, and allow doctors to engage fully with their patients. The current clinical documentation process is flawed. It burdens clinicians with administrative work, contributing to high burnout rates and reduced care quality. Existing documentation solutions force a choice between patient interaction and screen interaction.
This role is intended for a visionary who can reimagine entire experiences. You will address problems that have not been solved before in an industry where design choices affect human lives and well-being.
What You'll Do
You will define the product experience at Abridge, setting a high standard for design clarity and strategic thought across projects that directly affect clinicians, patients, and care teams. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to immerse yourself in complex clinical workflows, bringing structure and empathy to ambiguous challenges. This involves prototyping new concepts and refining existing features, while advocating for design excellence at every phase of the product lifecycle.
You will simplify complex situations, tackling difficult design and customer issues to transform intricate clinical workflows and AI functionalities into intuitive and delightful user experiences. You will elevate the team's craft and set design standards, pushing the boundaries of visual and interaction design with a strong command of design principles, motion, and prototyping to ensure that every pixel and interaction is carefully considered and executed perfectly.
You will lead end-to-end design execution, designing for current requirements and future challenges by converting early ideas into concrete, high-fidelity designs, prototypes, and user flows. No task will be considered too minor or too large when building exceptional products. You will champion user-centered design, passionately advocating for our users - the clinicians who use our product daily - engaging in user research, synthesizing insights, and ensuring that every design decision is based on a deep understanding of their needs and pain points.
You will partner with data scientists and engineers to translate complex model outputs into clear, actionable UI representations. You will define the information architecture that allows clinicians to verify and trust AI-generated content, creating systems that make complex data feel approachable and human. You will play a key role in shaping the product roadmap through strategic design thinking, identifying opportunities and defining solutions that balance user needs with business objectives. You will mentor junior designers and foster a culture of design rigor within the product team.
You will conduct design reviews and present your work to senior leadership and stakeholders, articulating the rationale behind design decisions and trade-offs. You will ensure that the voice of the user is heard at the highest levels of the organization. You will contribute to the development of design systems and patterns that scale across products, ensuring consistency and accessibility across the platform and establishing best practices that influence how design is done across the company.
Requirements
You must have 7-12+ years of experience delivering impactful product design in complex fields. Experience with AI is a plus. You must have a proven history of leading major design initiatives from concept to launch, with a track record that shows measurable improvements in user experience and business results.
You must maintain a high standard of craftsmanship, consistently meeting and exceeding this standard while paying attention to detail and inspiring others to do the same. You must have exceptional communication, presentation, and storytelling abilities, allowing you to explain design reasoning and influence stakeholders at all organizational levels.
You must be highly collaborative and humble, possessing a low ego and a true desire to learn, teach, and grow with a fast-paced, high-performing team. You must be comfortable navigating ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information, thriving in environments where problems are complex and the stakes are high.
You must have a deep empathy for users, driven by a desire to solve meaningful problems for the people who will ultimately use your products. You must be able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-moving environment, being disciplined in your process and organized in your thinking.
