Job description
About the role
Xealth is transforming how health systems deliver care by embedding digital health directly into clinical workflows. We are seeking a Director of Engineering to own and scale our engineering organization. This individual will set technical direction, build high-performing teams, and drive execution for our cloud-native platform. The role is hands-on, requiring deep architectural involvement and leadership in a fast-paced, regulated environment. This position is based in Seattle, Washington, and follows a hybrid work model.
About the role
The will own the end-to-end technical strategy and execution of our digital health platform. You will partner with CTO-level leadership to define technical direction while building and scaling engineering teams capable of delivering secure, compliant, and highly available cloud-native services on AWS. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires deep architectural involvement alongside team mentorship and organizational scaling. You will be responsible for establishing engineering standards, driving process excellence, and ensuring alignment with healthcare regulatory requirements. The role demands fluency in modern distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and the unique constraints of regulated environments. You will translate complex technical concepts into clear strategy for both technical and executive audiences, including the board.
What You'll Own
You will provide end-to-end ownership of product delivery across our digital health platform. This includes defining technical strategy in collaboration with Product, Design, and the CTO. You will build, mentor, and scale engineering teams, overseeing hiring, performance management, and career development. A core responsibility is driving architectural decisions for secure, highly available cloud services deployed on AWS. You will establish and refine engineering processes, including agile practices, code review standards, on-call procedures, and incident response protocols. You will champion the adoption of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to improve team velocity and code quality. Cross-functional partnership with Security, Compliance, and Customer Success will ensure engineering efforts align with Xealth's healthcare commitments and regulatory obligations. You will communicate technical strategy and trade-offs to both technical and executive stakeholders, including the board. Vendor and infrastructure decisions will be managed in close partnership with the CTO.
Requirements
The candidate must possess a strong foundation as an individual software engineer before transitioning into leadership. You bring 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of leading engineering teams managing 5 to 25 engineers through periods of significant growth and complexity.
Your technical expertise must include deep knowledge of AWS and cloud-native architecture, with direct experience designing and operating scalable, resilient distributed systems. You are fluent in modern software architecture patterns, including microservices and event-driven systems. You operate comfortably within security- and compliance-conscious environments. Strong leadership and communication skills are essential. You must be able to influence executives and non-technical partners while clearly articulating technical strategy.
Preferred experience includes a background in SaaS, particularly within healthcare or other regulated industries. Familiarity with healthcare data standards like FHIR or HL7 is an asset. Experience with HIPAA compliance and healthcare data security requirements is preferred. Background scaling engineering organizations at high-growth startups is also preferred. U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required for this position.
What You'll Do
You will define and execute the technical roadmap for Xealth's digital health platform in partnership with product and design teams. You will architect, design, and deliver scalable, secure, and highly available services on AWS that enable healthcare organizations to embed digital health into clinical workflows. You will build, mentor, and retain high-performing engineering teams, driving career development and performance management for engineers at all levels. You will establish engineering best practices, including infrastructure as code, code review standards, automated testing, on-call procedures, and incident response protocols. You will lead the adoption of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to accelerate delivery and improve code quality. You will partner with Security, Compliance, and Customer Success to ensure all engineering initiatives meet healthcare regulatory standards. You will communicate technical strategy, priorities, and trade-offs to executive and non-technical stakeholders. You will collaborate closely with the CTO on vendor and infrastructure decisions, ensuring alignment with cost, security, and scalability objectives.
Requirements
In addition to the core requirements outlined above, you must have a demonstrated history of shipping reliable software in production environments. You should have hands-on experience with cloud-native technologies, containerization, and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes. Experience building and operating distributed systems that handle sensitive data with high integrity is essential. You must be comfortable making decisions in ambiguous, fast-paced environments while maintaining focus on compliance and risk management. You should have a proven ability to lead through change, manage growing teams, and foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
