About the role
You will own the end-to-end systems engineering lifecycle for WHOOP's next-generation wearable hardware programs, acting as the central technical integrator across Electrical, Mechanical, Firmware, Signal Processing, and Product teams. You will define and shepherd system architecture decisions that balance performance, reliability, and manufacturability while ensuring strict alignment with product requirements and user value. In this leadership role, you will guide critical technical trade-offs, influence product direction, and drive the resolution of complex system-level problems that span the entire development stack. You will mentor engineers by providing hands-on technical guidance and taking on organizational impact as the team scales. Your work will directly shape the future of wearable technology by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in health and performance sensing. You will translate abstract product goals into concrete system specifications and validation strategies that de-risk development and accelerate delivery. What you'll do
Lead systems engineering activities for wearable hardware programs, ensuring alignment between product requirements, system architecture, and technical execution across the full development lifecycle.
Define, maintain, and manage system requirements, interface definitions, and technical documentation to create a single source of truth that guides design and verification decisions.
Collaborate cross-functionally to define and refine system requirements, focusing on seamless integration of Electrical, Mechanical, Firmware, Signal Processing, Manufacturing, and Product components to eliminate gaps and dependencies.
Develop and execute verification and validation strategies that confirm system-level alignment with requirements, defining test protocols, success metrics, and traceability across the development program.
Participate in architecture and design reviews, providing technical recommendations that improve system performance, reliability, scalability, and manufacturability while balancing cost and schedule constraints.
Identify technical risks, investigate root causes, and drive cross-functional resolution throughout development, escalating as needed to keep programs on track.
Mentor engineers through hands-on technical guidance and leadership, with clear opportunities to take on people management responsibilities as the team matures and grows.
Travel up to 15% domestically and internationally to collaborate with partners, suppliers, and manufacturers, ensuring alignment on technical expectations and execution standards.
Champion best practices in requirements management, system integration, and documentation to create reusable assets and accelerate future program launches.
Partner closely with firmware and signal processing teams to optimize sensor performance, data quality, and power efficiency within the constraints of the hardware platform.
Influence mechanical and industrial design decisions by translating electrical system constraints and opportunities into clear requirements and trade-off analyses.
Support regulatory and compliance activities related to hardware platforms, ensuring that designs incorporate necessary certifications and safety considerations early in development.
Drive the implementation of debug and diagnostic capabilities in hardware to streamline bring-up, validation, and field troubleshooting for future products.
Evaluate emerging components, technologies, and manufacturing processes, and translate findings into actionable recommendations for architecture improvements.
Own critical aspects of the hardware roadmap by coordinating with product leadership to align system capabilities with market needs and competitive positioning.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in electrical systems engineering, hardware design, or a related domain, with a track record of delivering complex hardware products.
Proven expertise in electrical system architecture and integration, including schematic capture, PCB layout, power management, and signal integrity considerations.
Strong cross-disciplinary understanding of electrical, firmware, and mechanical domains, enabling effective communication and collaboration across specialized teams.
Analytical problem-solving skills with a focus on driving impactful, system-level decisions that balance technical rigor with business constraints.
Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to creating and maintaining thorough, accurate, and well-organized documentation that supports development and compliance.
Strong communication skills to facilitate collaboration between technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executives, partners, and external manufacturers.
Experience with schematic/layout reviews, and laboratory equipment for hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, and test fixtures.
Demonstrated ability to mentor or manage engineers from diverse technical backgrounds, fostering a culture of learning, clarity, and execution.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Proven commitment to following and improving engineering processes to ensure traceability, repeatability, and continuous improvement.
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 15% to support program objectives, including time in the Boston office and at external sites.
Ability to translate high-level product requirements into detailed system specifications that can be implemented and verified by cross-functional teams.
Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance in all hardware development activities.
