About the role
You will own the end to end delivery of clinical tools that translate complex member health data into actionable insights for healthcare providers. You will design and implement secure backend services and intuitive front end interfaces that ensure sensitive physiological data is handled with the utmost care. You will partner tightly with clinical experts to turn medical requirements into robust digital health experiences. You will contribute to a shared design system to maintain consistency across every health interaction. You will iterate quickly using data driven feedback to improve both clinician and member workflows. You will write reliable code and participate actively in engineering practices that uphold security and performance. You will help bring innovative health features to market while maintaining compliance and reliability standards.

What you'll do
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Clinical, and Data Science teams to build impactful clinical tools and healthcare experiences that improve member outcomes.
- Develop and maintain full stack applications using React, TypeScript, Java, RESTful APIs, Postgres, Kafka, and AWS to support scalable and secure health workflows.
- Build intuitive, accessible user interfaces while leveraging and contributing to WHOOP's shared design system to deliver consistent experiences across clinical products.
- Design and implement secure backend services and APIs that protect sensitive health information and meet the reliability needs of healthcare providers.
- Translate complex product and clinical requirements into technical solutions, identifying risks early and delivering features through iterative development cycles.
- Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code, and actively participate in code reviews to uphold engineering best practices and team standards.
- Work across the full technology stack to ship features quickly while ensuring high quality, security, and performance in production environments.
- Integrate with third party systems and data sources to enable seamless data flows that support clinical decision making and member insights.
- Troubleshoot production issues, monitor system health, and collaborate with on call rotations to resolve incidents affecting healthcare tools.
- Contribute to technical documentation that helps other engineers and clinical teams understand system behavior and integration points.
- Support testing and validation efforts required for healthcare environments, including working with compliance and security teams.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing guidance on architecture, testing, and professional growth within the health team.
- Participate in planning and estimation sessions to define scope, prioritize work, and drive predictable delivery for clinical initiatives.
- Continuously explore new technologies and patterns that can improve the efficiency, security, and usability of WHOOP's digital health offerings.
Requirements
- Experience building modern web applications using React and TypeScript in a production environment.
- Experience developing backend services and RESTful APIs using Java or another object oriented language with strong object oriented design skills.
- Experience working with relational databases such as Postgres and writing complex queries to retrieve and manipulate data.
- Experience building secure applications, with a solid understanding of authentication, authorization, and best practices for protecting sensitive user data.
- Experience working with modern frontend architecture, component libraries, and design systems to build reusable and consistent interfaces.
- Experience writing automated tests, including unit and integration tests, to ensure reliability and maintainability of code.
- Strong problem solving skills and the ability to analyze complex requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
- Thrives in a fast paced, collaborative environment and is comfortable working across the full technology stack.
- Willingness to relocate to Boston, MA or an approved remote site to fulfill the requirements of this position.
- U.S. work authorization is required for this position.
- Demonstrated ability to produce clear technical documentation that supports engineering and clinical stakeholders.
- Commitment to writing clean code and participating actively in code reviews to maintain high quality standards.
- Understanding of data privacy and security considerations relevant to handling health information.
- Willingness to engage with cross functional stakeholders including clinicians, designers, and data scientists.
Nice to have
- Experience with Kafka and cloud infrastructure on AWS.
- Familiarity with healthcare data standards and digital health regulations.
- Contributions to open source projects or public facing technical documentation.
Practical notes
This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.
