About the role
You will lead the design and development of signal processing for real-time, edge inference on consumer products within the Sensor Intelligence Group. This role owns the full lifecycle of feature development, from prototyping and validation through productionization and continuous improvement. You will evaluate commercial solutions and create demos to inform build versus buy decisions for critical physiological insights. Collaboration with hardware, software, and product teams is central as you bring algorithms to life for WHOOP members around the world. You will mentor junior engineers and help cultivate a high-performance, research-to-production culture within SIG. The work you do will directly underpin foundational health features that deliver meaningful and personalized feedback to millions of members. Your contributions will shape the edge processing capabilities that define the next generation of sensor intelligence at WHOOP.

What you'll do
Lead the design and development of signal processing for real-time, edge inference on consumer products.

Develop edge signal processing that underpins WHOOP physiological insights and coaching features delivered to members.
Optimize system-level design and performance to maximize product battery life across diverse usage scenarios.
Apply strong foundations in signal processing fundamentals such as filtering, spectral analysis, and time-frequency methods.
Demonstrate proficiency in Python or MATLAB for algorithm prototyping and C/C++ for deployment to embedded product platforms.
Communicate technical results clearly and effectively to a diverse audience through presentations and written documentation.
Explore and implement hybrid DSP and machine learning approaches with a focus on signal pre-processing and feature extraction.
Leverage knowledge of embedded systems, RTOS, and firmware development practices to ensure robust algorithm integration.
Deepen understanding of sensor physics and sensor fusion techniques to improve accuracy and reliability of insights.
Utilize microcontroller libraries such as CMSIS-DSP or CMSIS-NN for efficient on-device signal processing implementations.
Requirements
B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required; an M.S. or PhD is preferred.
Possess 5+ years of experience developing and deploying real-time sensor signal processing algorithms across domains such as physiological, audio, motion, and more.
Demonstrate prior experience deploying algorithms to consumer product embedded platforms, including fixed-point DSPs or microcontrollers.
Show strong foundation in signal processing fundamentals, including filtering, spectral analysis, and time-frequency methods.
Exhibit proven ability to optimize system-level design for performance and battery life in resource-constrained products.
Display proficiency in Python or MATLAB for algorithm prototyping and C/C++ for production deployment on embedded platforms.
Communicate excellent verbal and written skills, with the capacity to present technical results to a diverse audience.
Be prepared to relocate to Boston, MA, or nearby if necessary to work from the WHOOP office.
Nice to have
Experience developing hybrid DSP and ML systems, focusing on signal pre-processing and feature extraction.
Knowledge of embedded systems, RTOS, and firmware development workflows.

Practical notes
This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.
