Mechanical Engineer I
Job description
About the role
At WHOOP, we are on a mission to unlock human performance by empowering members to understand their bodies and daily lives at a deeper level. Through innovative hardware and actionable insights, we help members achieve their goals and push the boundaries of human potential. As a Mechanical Engineer on the Hardware Advanced Development Team, you will play a critical role in this mission by owning the end-to-end mechanical development of early-stage hardware concepts. You will translate abstract ideas into tangible, testable prototypes, driving innovation from conceptual design through to manufacturing readiness. This role demands a self-motivated engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and wants to see their work directly impact the next generation of wearable technology.
This position is based in Boston, MA, and requires the successful candidate to be prepared to relocate if necessary to work from the WHOOP office.
What you'll do
- Contribute to the conceptualization and mechanical design of early-stage projects that define the future direction of WHOOP hardware.
- Design, prototype, and test intricate mechanical assemblies around microelectronics, balancing technical performance, industrial design, and manufacturability requirements.
- Develop multiple distinct design approaches for complex challenges, then clearly articulate trade-offs and recommendations to hardware, software, and product stakeholders.
- Document design decisions, specifications, and validation results in a thorough and structured manner to support downstream engineering and regulatory needs.
- Partner with hardware product managers and cross-functional leaders to evaluate emerging technologies and de-risk concepts ahead of production scale-up.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain in-house prototyping equipment such as 3D printers and CNC machines to produce high-fidelity proof-of-concept models quickly.
- Plan and execute comprehensive testing campaigns using structured methodologies to measure performance, durability, and compliance under realistic conditions.
- Collaborate closely with senior engineers to assess new materials, components, and manufacturing processes for feasibility and scalability.
- Analyze test data using statistical tools to extract actionable insights that improve reliability, yield, and user experience.
- Support travel up to 10% to engage with contract manufacturers and suppliers, ensuring alignment on quality, timelines, and cost targets.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
- Bring 0 to 3 years of professional experience designing complex mechanical products, ideally within consumer electronics, wearables, or medical devices.
- Demonstrate proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, including advanced assemblies, surfacing, and configuration management.
- Apply SolidWorks best practices consistently, translating conceptual sketches into robust, production-oriented models.
- Have hands-on experience with rapid prototyping tools and fabrication methods to iterate quickly on physical proof-of-concept designs.
- Show comfort working within cross-functional teams, communicating effectively with engineers, designers, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Exhibit familiarity with validation testing methods and statistical analysis tools to support data-driven decision making.
- Understand high-volume manufacturing techniques such as injection molding, sheet metal forming, and manual assembly constraints.
- Prior experience in premium consumer electronics or wearable technology product development is preferred.
Nice to have
- Previous work on hardware products that required compliance with industry safety and quality standards.
- Experience coordinating across distributed teams and managing multiple design iterations under tight timelines.
Practical notes
Candidates who do not meet every qualification are encouraged to apply, as WHOOP values character as much as experience and believes there is much more to a candidate than what is written on paper. This role is full-time and eligible for participation in the company benefits program as defined by WHOOP policies.
