About the role
Wheely provides premium transportation services to corporate clients and individual riders across Europe, the US, and the Middle East. We are seeking a developer to join our specialized privacy engineering team to build systems that ensure user location data remains inaccessible. The role focuses on architecting and implementing robust privacy controls that prevent unauthorized access to sensitive rider information. You will be responsible for translating high-level privacy requirements into concrete technical specifications and production-ready code. The position demands a deep commitment to data protection principles and a proactive approach to identifying potential privacy risks in the software lifecycle. You will work on systems that are foundational to maintaining the trust of our users and protecting their sensitive movements. Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and implement privacy-focused systems that ensure the secure handling and isolation of user location data.
- Develop backend services using Node.js or Golang to power privacy controls and data access restrictions.
- Build and maintain the frontend user interface using React, TypeScript, and associated state management libraries.
- Integrate with existing infrastructure components such as MongoDB, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, and Redis to enforce privacy policies.
- Utilize gRPC and Thrift protocols to enable secure and efficient communication between microservices.
- Configure and manage deployment infrastructure on AWS using Terraform and Kubernetes (K8S).
- Write comprehensive automated test suites, including end-to-end tests with Playwright and unit tests with Jest.
- Collaborate with product managers and designers to refine privacy features from the initial concept through to production release.
- Conduct code reviews and contribute to the technical documentation for privacy-related systems.
- Optimize application performance and reliability for privacy-critical operations.
- Implement security best practices to protect against data breaches and unauthorized data access.
- Participate in on-call rotations to respond to privacy-related incidents and service issues.
- Continuously evaluate new technologies and methodologies to improve the privacy and security posture of the platform.
- Ensure all development work adheres to the company's strict data handling and privacy compliance standards.
Requirements
- Hold a STEM or technical degree as evidence of your foundational technical knowledge.
- Possess 3+ years of professional experience as a full-stack or frontend engineer with backend exposure.
- Demonstrate practical experience using Node.js for server-side development.
- Exhibit strong frontend skills including proficiency in TypeScript, React, React Query, and state management libraries like Redux or MobX.
- Show mastery of core web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and current browser APIs.
- Have experience with frontend build tools including Vite or Webpack and ESLint for code quality.
- Be comfortable using package managers like npm or pnpm for dependency management.
- Prove ability to write automated tests, including end-to-end testing with Playwright or Selenium.
- Have experience with UI or component testing using tools like Jest.
- Understand how to interact with databases such as MongoDB and PostgreSQL.
- Be familiar with message brokers like RabbitMQ for asynchronous communication.
- Know how to use caching systems like Redis to optimize application performance.
- Have experience with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform for cloud resource management.
- Understand containerization and orchestration concepts related to Kubernetes (K8S).

- Professional experience with Golang for building high-performance backend services.

- This is an office-based position in Nicosia requiring four days in the office with flexible hours and one remote day per week.
