(Senior) Backend Engineer, Maps
Job description
About the role
The Mapping team manages the spatial intelligence of our platform, including road matching, ETA calculations, and high-frequency coordinate processing. We are seeking a backend engineer to build maintainable systems using TDD and DDD principles while helping us transition from our legacy Ruby monolith to a Go-based microservices architecture. In this capacity, you will own the design and evolution of the services that power real-time decision-making for our fleet. You will be responsible for ensuring that location data is processed with high accuracy and low latency across distributed systems. Your work will directly impact the reliability of navigation and routing for our customers worldwide. You will act as a technical leader within the Mapping group, guiding best practices and code quality. This role requires a proactive mindset to identify bottlenecks and implement resilient solutions.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop high-performance services primarily using Go to handle large-scale geospatial workloads.
- Build new microservices and assist in the migration of legacy components from Ruby to Go.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and data scientists to translate complex requirements into robust technical architecture.
- Maintain system responsiveness and reliability under high traffic loads during peak operational hours.
- Implement efficient data pipelines for processing coordinate streams and maintaining map-matching integrity.
- Optimize database queries and caching strategies to reduce latency for time-critical routing operations.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to the architectural direction of the Mapping platform.
- Ensure that services are observable, monitorable, and capable of rapid debugging in production environments.
- Support the deployment and operations of services within Kubernetes clusters using infrastructure as code.
- Contribute to the design of APIs using gRPC and Thrift to enable seamless communication between microservices.
Requirements

- Experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis for managing structured, semi-structured, and cache data.
- Familiarity with message brokers such as RabbitMQ or Kafka for building asynchronous workflows.
- Minimum 1 year of professional experience working with geospatial data, map-matching, or routing algorithms.
- English proficiency at B2 level or higher for technical communication and collaboration.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and the challenges of state management in networked environments.
- Ability to write clean, testable code and follow test-driven development practices consistently.
Nice to have
- Understanding of navigation systems, including GPS drift and rerouting logic to improve real-world accuracy.
- Experience with routing engines like OSRM to optimize pathfinding performance.
