Senior Software Developer, ML Ops

About the role

You will own the design and delivery of scalable, framework-agnostic machine learning infrastructure that powers every model in production at Wealthsimple. You will partner closely with data scientists, product managers, and infrastructure teams to solve technical challenges at scale while establishing long-term architectural direction. In this role, you will set the standards for how models are trained, deployed, monitored, and evaluated across the organization. You will build and maintain the core platforms that enable rapid experimentation and reliable execution for both traditional ML and GenAI workloads. You will have the autonomy to make impactful technical decisions that shape the company's machine learning capabilities. You will ensure that our systems deliver strong observability, performance, and maintainability over the long term. You will play a central role in enabling other teams to ship data products quickly and safely.

What you'll do

• Partner with stakeholders across different product domains and infrastructure teams to tackle technical problems at scale.
• Establish roadmap and architecture for Wealthsimple's Machine Learning platform.
• Build highly performant scalable systems, contributing to our ML platform on Kubernetes and Ray.
• Work with a large amount of autonomy to set the technical direction for scalable projects.
• Build framework-agnostic services that support all of Wealthsimple's machine learning needs.
• Provide centralized, governed access to internal and external LLMs.
• Contribute to the ML platform to support the launch of new data products.
• Ensure systems are observable, maintainable, and performant in production environments.
• Own projects end-to-end from conception through long-term operation and maintenance.
• Collaborate with data scientists to enable them to do their best work through reliable tooling.
• Set the technical direction for how ML and LLM models are trained, shipped, and operated.
• Support the expansion of our ML-ops tooling as we move quickly and build thoughtfully.
• Help standardize services that work across traditional ML and GenAI workloads.
• Work within a modern stack to deliver robust and scalable machine learning infrastructure.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience implementing production-ready services.
• 3+ years of experience with python.
• 5+ years of software development experience in ML infra, ML tooling or ML engineering.
• Proven experience designing and implementing highly performant scalable systems with good observability.
• Proven experience owning a project end-to-end and owning and tending complex systems for the long run.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, and reliability best practices.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
• Experience contributing to technical design discussions and setting direction for large-scale projects.
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code, monitoring, logging, and alerting in production systems.
• Ability to collaborate across teams and communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Willingness to learn and adapt to new tools, frameworks, and processes as the company evolves.
• Commitment to writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
• Understanding of security and compliance considerations in cloud-based systems.
• Readiness to engage with the machine learning ecosystem and adopt best practices where applicable.

Nice to have

• Preferred experience with ML ecosystem (e.g. pytorch, transformers, Ray, feature stores, elastic search and similar vector databases, triton, cuda, DVC, vLLM).
