About the role

You will own the end to end creation of video content that explains Ukraine to a global YouTube audience through current events, culture and history. You will translate complex stories into visually compelling narratives that combine journalistic integrity with creative execution. You will act as a visual storyteller, responsible for shaping how the world sees Ukraine through the lens of your edit suite. This role demands ownership of projects from initial concept through to final delivery on multiple platforms. You will directly contribute to the mission of an independent media outlet reaching millions of readers and viewers. The position requires a balance of artistic vision and technical discipline to meet strict production standards. You will be a key driver in building the video identity of The Kyiv Independent.

What you'll do

Develop creative concepts that explain information and tell a story visually for YouTube and related channels.

Execute precise video editing tasks, including cutting footage, adding transitions, effects, graphics and enhancing visual and audio elements.

Collaborate strongly with creative teams to conceive, create and deliver visually compelling narratives and stories.

Manage multiple video projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and quality.

Work closely with producers and head of the video department to understand project objectives and deliver content that meets creative expectations.

Manage time effectively to meet project deadlines, prioritizing tasks based on project needs and timelines.

Demonstrate advanced proficiency in video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro and stay updated on industry standard techniques.

Utilize technical expertise to enhance video quality, incorporating visual effects and sound design as needed to strengthen the narrative.

Collaborate effectively with the rest of the team to achieve a harmonious and visually appealing final product.

Communicate proactively with team members to understand project requirements and ensure alignment with creative goals.

Uphold high quality standards throughout the editing process, conducting thorough reviews of footage, cuts, and final edits.

Ensure the consistency of the visual style and brand identity across all video content produced for The Kyiv Independent.

Showcase adaptability in production workflows to support the fast paced environment of an expanding media organization.

Support the production of documentaries, news summaries, field reports and other video formats that serve the audience.

Requirements

Strong command of the English language at an advanced level, both written and verbal.

Proven experience as a YouTuber, Videographer and or Video Editor with a track record of delivered content.

A strong portfolio showcasing successful and diverse video projects that demonstrate your range and skill.

Experience with various cameras, particularly the Sony alpha series, and understanding of their capabilities.

Knowledge of camera operation, composition and lighting principles to create visually engaging shots.

Ability to light interviews and record clear audio to ensure professional quality sound.

Advanced proficiency in video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro and other relevant tools.

Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work effectively within a team environment.

Demonstrated ability to manage production timelines and deliver high quality content consistently under pressure.

Organized approach to work, with the capacity to delegate and collaborate to bring together resources and assets.

A clear understanding of the Ukrainian context, including cultural nuances and current events.
