We are currently seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer who possesses a genuine interest and demonstrated background in creating robust electrical systems for airfield and airport operations. This role focuses on the design of lighting, control mechanisms, and power distribution for both commercial and general aviation facilities. You will be entrusted with a diverse portfolio of airport and aviation projects, contributing your expertise to ensure the success of each initiative.
The core of this position revolves around the design and development of critical electrical infrastructure. You will be responsible for engineering the components that manage power distribution, control systems, emergency power sources, navigational aids (NAVAIDS), and the intricate airfield lighting networks. A significant portion of your duties will involve performing construction administration and conducting on-site inspections. This ensures that the physical installation adheres precisely to the design specifications and complies with the rigorous standards of the aviation industry. The position operates within a hybrid framework, requiring presence in the Wauwatosa, Wisconsin office Tuesday through Thursday, with Monday and Friday designated as work-from-home days. The ideal candidate will reside within regular commuting distance of this location.
Key Responsibilities
You will be the lead architect of electrical intake processes, gathering and analyzing data to define the requirements for complex airfield systems while rigorously assessing site constraints and operational demands. Your expertise will be vital in crafting detailed control schemes and power layouts specifically for lighting, security, and communications hardware deployed at commercial airport facilities. You will model electrical distribution routes and protection strategies for emergency generator systems, placing a strong emphasis on the resilience and reliability of NAVAIDS and critical airfield circuits.
Collaboration is central to this role. You will work in concert with structural and mechanical teams to ensure that the installation of conduit, raceway, and cabinets seamlessly integrates into the broader aviation construction sequence. You will guide the review of schematics and engineering calculations, validating system performance and strict adherence to electrical codes before finalizing detailed documentation. Your vigilance will extend to construction observation, where you will monitor field conditions and verify that the installed work faithfully represents the design intent. A key aspect of the position involves coordination with aviation authorities and equipment vendors to guarantee that lighting configurations, control interfaces, and signaling systems meet all operational and regulatory standards. You will also support other partner firms on multi-disciplined projects, successfully integrating electrical components into the larger airport infrastructure deliverables.
Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must hold an active professional engineering license for electrical work within at least one jurisdiction. A minimum of four years of hands-on experience designing systems for airports or other complex commercial facilities is mandatory. You must possess a deep understanding of power distribution, protection relaying, and control logic as it applies to runway, taxiway, and terminal environments. also, you must be proficient in interpreting the technical standards and engineering drawings that govern airfield lighting and navigation aid installations. Reliable execution within the specified hybrid work schedule is essential, along with the ability to travel as necessary within the vicinity of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, for project meetings and reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, experience with airport-specific design software and tools that facilitate the layout, analysis, and documentation of electrical systems is highly valued. Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD; Electrical for PCF; Microsoft Office; Projectwise; Bentley ProjectStation; and Adobe Acrobat is considered a significant asset.
