Job description
About the role
Tin Can is a Wi-Fi landline designed to bring voice-to-voice conversation back to children during the years before smartphones. The company builds products for parents who want to give their kids independence and connection without handing them a device filled with endless scrolling and games. As a contract Brand & Product Copywriter, you will craft the words across every surface the brand touches, from the four words on a box that make a child beg for one, to the email that gets a parent to hit buy. You will be the guardian of a voice that is playful, nostalgic, and a little irreverent, ensuring that every piece of copy feels delightful and true to the brand.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Write copy for packaging, web pages, email flows, social captions, and in-app product surfaces across the brand.
- Champion and coach the Tin Can voice, making sure it stays playful, nostalgic, and rarely saccharine across all formats.
- Partner closely with brand and product teams to support campaigns and make processes digestible and fun for everyone involved.
- Own the copy for subscriber flows, promotions, and seasonal pushes that need to be funny enough to enjoy and sharp enough to convert.
- Adapt the brand's unusual tone of voice into unexpected places, creating small moments of delight that set the brand apart.
- Give and receive sharp creative feedback in a fast-moving, founder-led environment where iteration happens quickly and directly.
- Establish guardrails including voice guidelines, tone documents, and naming frameworks so the brand stays consistent as it grows.
- Write copy that serves a dual audience of parents making purchases and children who are the end users of the product.
- Create clear and reassuring content for worried parents, such as FAQs and help documentation, without sounding like a legal document.
- Develop storytelling on web, email, and social platforms in ways that feel native to each channel and audience.
- Ensure that product and packaging copy makes five words on a box do a significant amount of work for the brand.
- Support the brand mission of giving kids something real back by writing copy that resonates with both children and design-aware adults.
Requirements
- Six or more years of writing copy with demonstrated experience in both brand and campaign work and direct-response or lifecycle copy.
- A portfolio that shows real range, including the ability to write something funny and light for a child and something clear and reassuring for a parent.
- Comfort with product and packaging copy, knowing how to make a small number of words on a box carry significant meaning.
- Experience writing for a dual-audience brand where the purchaser and the end user are different people with different needs.
- Sharp editorial instincts that distinguish between something merely cute and something genuinely clever, with a default toward the latter.
- A track record of writing within an established brand voice while still maintaining your own distinct point of view.
- Comfort working in a startup or founder-led environment with fast iteration, direct feedback, and few layers between you and the decision maker.
- Strong ability to write email and lifecycle copy that moves subscribers and drives measurable results for the brand.
Nice to have
- Experience with product or brand naming, or a genuine enthusiasm for the craft of finding the right name.
- A background in consumer products where humor is a central part of the brand identity and messaging.
- Familiarity with lifecycle and CRM copywriting across email, SMS, and app push notifications.
- A personal interest in children's media or products that bridge the gap between kid-facing and parent-facing audiences.
Skills & tools
- Proficiency in writing copy for packaging, including the discipline of making very few words carry real weight.
- Experience crafting email and SMS copy for lifecycle flows, promotional campaigns, and subscriber engagement sequences.
- Ability to write social media captions that feel platform-native while staying consistent with a defined brand voice.
- Skill in developing and documenting brand voice guidelines, tone of voice documents, and naming frameworks.
- Comfort writing in-app and product copy that guides users through digital experiences with clarity and personality.
- Strong editorial judgment that balances humor with clarity, especially when writing for audiences as different as children and parents.
Practical notes
- This is a contract role based in Seattle, with the expectation of close collaboration with the brand and product teams in person or via regular syncs.
- The position reports into a founder-led structure, meaning you will receive direct feedback and work with minimal organizational layers.
- The role requires comfort with fast iteration cycles, where copy is written, reviewed, and revised quickly in response to campaign needs.
- You will be expected to establish lasting brand guardrails that allow the voice to scale as the company grows its product line.
