Cloud Engineer - London
Job description
About the role
Role Mission
This position is designed for engineers who prioritise writing excellent code every day and continuous technical growth. The work centres on solving difficult technical challenges alongside talented peers while maintaining deep involvement with the codebase. Success is defined by consistent delivery and steady improvement.
You will operate within a high-performing team on fast-moving client projects. This requires thoughtful collaboration, clear communication, and proactive ownership in removing obstacles for yourself and colleagues. We seek engineers who ask insightful questions, learn from teammates, and secure the resources needed to perform at their best.
The Cloud Engineer will focus on building with Serverless on AWS. This is a client-facing role involving conversations and planning activities with external clients, encompassing both technical and business discussions. Although our primary stack is AWS Serverless and TypeScript, you will gain exposure to varied working methods and, when necessary, different technologies.
Skills
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a STEM field, or possess equivalent hands-on experience.
- Demonstrate proven experience with AWS Serverless technologies, including Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, CDK, or Terraform, in production settings.
- Show strong programming abilities in Node.js and TypeScript.
- Maintain a solid understanding of cloud architecture, serverless patterns, and established best practices.
What We Offer
In addition to a competitive salary, the following benefits support your professional and personal growth:
- 25 Days annual leave
- Learning and Development Support throughout your career at Theodo
- 3 week work from anywhere policy
- Equipment budget for your tech setup
- Company pension
- Monthly Socials
- Access to a Slack network of over 600 engineers across our extended ecosystem, enabling questions, pattern sharing, and troubleshooting with some of the sharpest developers.
- Monthly "Lunch & Tells" - in-person sessions for sharing technical discoveries, coding tricks, or field experiences with fellow engineers.
This role is based in our London office on a hybrid working basis.

Willingness to Improve
Actively identifying areas for improvement rather than accepting the status quo, learning promptly from problems, and embracing challenges outside of one's comfort zone. These skills are promoted across the team to benefit individuals, fellow Theodoers, Theodo, and the broader community.
What you'll do
- Architect and deploy serverless applications using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB with a focus on scalability and cost-efficiency.
- Implement and manage infrastructure as code using AWS CDK and Terraform to ensure reproducible and version-controlled environments.
- Collaborate with product managers and clients during discovery sessions to translate business requirements into technical cloud specifications.
- Optimize cloud resource configurations to enhance performance, reduce latency, and minimize operational overhead for deployed services.
- Write clean, well-documented TypeScript code that integrates seamlessly with serverless workflows and supports rapid feature iteration.
- Conduct in-depth troubleshooting of production incidents, analyzing logs and metrics to identify root causes and implement resilient fixes.
- Mentor junior engineers on serverless best practices, security standards, and efficient debugging techniques to elevate the entire team's capability.
- Participate in architectural reviews, providing data-driven insights on trade-offs between serverless patterns and traditional infrastructure approaches.
- Liaise with security and compliance stakeholders to ensure all cloud deployments adhere to organizational policies and industry standards.
- Explore and prototype emerging AWS services to evaluate their potential for improving delivery speed and product quality within client projects.
- Facilitate knowledge-sharing sessions that document lessons learned and standardize procedures for future engineering efforts.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to align cloud strategy with product roadmaps and long-term business objectives.
- Monitor system health and set up alerting mechanisms to ensure high availability and rapid response to service disruptions.
- Contribute to the evolution of internal tools and frameworks that streamline the deployment and management of serverless applications.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a STEM field, or possess equivalent hands-on experience.
- Demonstrate proven experience with AWS Serverless technologies, including Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, CDK, or Terraform, in production settings.
- Show strong programming abilities in Node.js and TypeScript.
- Maintain a solid understanding of cloud architecture, serverless patterns, and established best practices.
- Thrive in collaborative environments where clear communication is as important as technical execution.
- Exhibit strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex issues under tight deadlines.
- Take initiative in seeking solutions and leverage available resources to overcome obstacles without constant supervision.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders during client interactions and internal discussions.
