You will own the full lifecycle of premium video production for The Athletic's top-tier audience segments, translating complex sports narratives into visually arresting, platform-native stories. You will act as the strategic lead between editorial leadership and the production team, ensuring every video project aligns with business objectives and audience growth metrics. In this capacity, you will design and oversee the creation of high-impact video series that leverage proprietary data, live game contexts, and cultural moments to drive engagement. You will be responsible for establishing a sustainable creative rhythm that balances breaking news responsiveness with the development of long-form, evergreen video assets. You will partner closely with data and analytics teams to surface insights that inform story angles, visual treatments, and audience targeting strategies. You will mentor and elevate the work of subordinate producers by setting clear creative standards, providing actionable feedback, and fostering a collaborative production environment. You will manage high-stakes relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring consistent communication and alignment on priorities, timelines, and quality benchmarks. Lead the ideation and production of premium video formats, including highlight packages, long-form features, data-driven storytelling pieces, and live game coverage tailored for social platforms.
Collaborate with data teams to identify, interpret, and visualize complex sports metrics, transforming raw statistics into intuitive and engaging on-screen graphics.
Partner with editorial leadership to scout stories, set coverage priorities, and ensure video content supports and amplifies the broader journalism mission of The Athletic.
Oversee the full production workflow from concept and scripting through filming, editing, and final delivery, maintaining high standards for pacing, sound design, and visual coherence.
Build and maintain an evergreen video library by establishing clear tagging, version control, and archival processes to maximize content reuse and longevity.
Implement rigorous quality assurance processes for all video outputs, including technical checks, brand compliance, and platform-specific optimization before publication.
Liaise directly with social platforms and distribution partners to refine thumbnails, titles, and metadata, improving discoverability and click-through performance.
Mentor junior producers and video editors by providing clear creative direction, structured feedback, and professional development opportunities.
Establish and monitor key performance indicators for video content, using audience analytics to iterate on format, tone, and timing for maximum impact.
Coordinate cross-functional workflows with marketing, partnerships, and product teams to integrate video assets into larger campaigns and promotional initiatives.
Champion experimentation with emerging video technologies and storytelling techniques, testing new formats and tools that can be scaled across The Athletic's portfolio.
Maintain strict adherence to journalistic standards, ensuring that all video storytelling remains accurate, fair, and aligned with The Athletic's editorial guidelines.
Act as the primary point of contact for external vendors, freelancers, and technical partners when necessary, managing briefs, timelines, and deliverables.
Requirements
You must have at least eight years of professional video production experience, with a strong portfolio demonstrating work in sports, news, or documentary environments.
You must possess a proven track record of managing complex production schedules and delivering multiple high-priority projects under tight deadlines.
You must have hands-on experience with data visualization tools and the ability to collaborate with data teams to translate metrics into compelling visual formats.
You must demonstrate advanced proficiency in video editing software and a deep understanding of platform-specific content optimization for social and streaming environments.
You must have experience leading cross-functional teams, including writers, editors, producers, and technical staff, to achieve shared production goals.
You must hold a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, film, or a related field, or have equivalent practical experience that demonstrates similar preparation.
You must have a strong grasp of journalistic principles, including sourcing, verification, and ethical storytelling, with a commitment to accuracy and transparency.
