About the role
The Exploration Company is at the forefront of developing Nyx, an innovative modular and reusable orbital vehicle aimed at facilitating cargo transport and paving the way for future human space missions. We are seeking a Deputy Chief Engineer for the Storm project, who will play a crucial role in overseeing the development, integration, and rigorous testing of our advanced high-thrust LOX/LCH4 cryogenic engine and its associated turbomachinery. In this position, you will serve as the principal technical deputy to the Storm Chief Engineer, guiding the system-level design and turbopump architecture from the initial concept stage all the way through to hot-fire validation.

What you'll do
- Develop and define the architecture of the engine system, which includes the management of propellant supply, ignition sequences, and the integration of combustion devices with structural components.
- Act as the technical authority on turbopump design, focusing on critical areas such as rotordynamics, bearings, seals, and their integration with the gas generator.
- Oversee and lead comprehensive test campaigns that encompass everything from component-level rig trials to full engine hot-fire testing, ensuring thorough data analysis and effective resolution of any anomalies that arise.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering teams, ensuring that high standards of design rigor and safety are maintained throughout the development process.
- Conduct technical risk assessments and prepare necessary documentation for design reviews, as well as manage any non-conformance deviations.
- Represent the Storm Chief Engineer in technical discussions with external partners and suppliers, ensuring alignment and collaboration on project goals.
- Collaborate closely with program management to effectively balance performance targets with budgetary and scheduling constraints.
- Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the design and testing processes within the team.
- Foster a culture of innovation and excellence within the engineering team, encouraging creative solutions to complex challenges.
- Stay current with industry trends and advancements in cryogenic propulsion and turbomachinery to inform design decisions.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure alignment across all engineering disciplines involved in the project.
Requirements
- A Master's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or propulsion engineering is required.
- A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the development of liquid rocket engines is essential.
- In-depth expertise in cryogenic propulsion, particularly in turbomachinery design and hot-gas systems, is a must.
- Proven track record of successfully transitioning hardware from conceptual design through to testing phases.
- Hands-on experience with hot-fire or rig testing and the ability to conduct root-cause analysis effectively.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide cross-functional teams and navigate complex design trade-offs.
- Proficient in managing subsystem requirements and the verification processes associated with them.
- Excellent command of the English language, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Candidates must be nationals of eligible countries, including but not limited to Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and the United States.
Nice to have
- Experience with advanced materials and manufacturing processes for aerospace applications.
- Familiarity with software tools used for engine design and analysis, such as MATLAB or ANSYS.
- Previous involvement in international aerospace projects or collaborations.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards in aerospace engineering.
