Key facts
What you'll do
Creating polished character animation for action gameplay happens through close collaboration with design, shaping compelling player movement and feedback. You will own broad character animation deliverables, such as locomotion, abilities, interactions, and emotes, to define how characters behave in the world. Estimating animation scope and schedules with production ensures commitments are met on time and aligns with project planning. Documenting workflows and best practices makes animation processes repeatable and scalable for future development. Mentoring other animators on style and technical implementation raises overall quality and consistency across the team. Integrating high-quality animation into a game engine with minimal oversight delivers a polished action gameplay experience to players.

Successful gameplay animators iterate closely with design and engineering to refine player feedback. Understanding of game engine workflows enables efficient integration and iteration. Clear communication and mentorship strengthen cross-discipline collaboration on large-scale projects.
Questions to ask
Worth asking in any interview: how the team measures success, who the role works with daily, what the onboarding looks like, and what the company is trying to achieve this year. Asking what past hires did well is a strong final question. Keep the list short and pick the questions that matter most to you.
Career growth
Career growth comes from taking on harder problems and making your work visible. Look for opportunities to own outcomes, mentor others, and learn the business beyond your team. Growth in any career comes from scope, results, and reputation. Take on work that is slightly uncomfortable, and make sure others can see the outcomes.
