About the role

Tailscale is building a new internet infrastructure that simplifies secure device connections. We are looking for a Software Engineer to enhance our networking capabilities, contributing to both client code and backend services. You will own features from conception through implementation, collaborating with design and product teams.

What you'll do

• Develop core networking software, including open-source client components and backend services, focusing on performance and network optimization.
• Manage the full lifecycle of product features, from initial ideas to strategic planning and execution.
• Collaborate with user experience and product management to refine networking features.
• Build, test, and document fundamental networking software.
• Ensure the reliability and scalability of running services by focusing on observability and incident response.
• Analyze and enhance the efficiency, scalability, and stability of our networking systems.
• Integrate security best practices into all aspects of design and implementation.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience building application-layer networking concepts and distributed systems like proxies, connectors, and overlay routing.
• In-depth understanding of operating system networking internals, including socket programming, routing, and packet filtering.
• Professional experience writing code in Go (Golang).
• Experience designing and maintaining distributed systems, with a strong grasp of concurrency and scalability principles.
• Proficiency with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, and the ability to write efficient SQL.
• Strong communication skills, capable of clearly explaining complex technical ideas.
• A collaborative spirit, adept at both giving and receiving feedback, and working independently or as part of a team.
• Adaptability and a proactive approach to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.

Salary range: $218,420 - $302,840 CAD

Benefits include comprehensive health, vision, and dental coverage with no waiting period, employer-funded retirement contributions (matching up to 0.75% of eligible compensation), and a $1500 USD annual professional development budget.

Home office setup includes a company-provided laptop (Mac or PC), monthly internet reimbursement, and a $500 USD stipend for workstation customization.

Paid parental leave: 20 weeks for birthing parents, 16 weeks for non-birthing parents.
