Principal Product Manager

About the role

The role defines and drives product strategy for Tailscale's dataplane platform that carries customer traffic and ensures connectivity feels automatic, reliable, and secure. The position reports to Tailscale's VP Product, Ross Kukulinski. The hire owns the end-to-end lifecycle of the dataplane platform product strategy, translating abstract networking constraints into clear customer value and operational requirements. They convert customer feedback and partner requirements into a coherent vision that spans clients, relays, and edge infrastructure to make connectivity feel automatic and reliable. This role is responsible for defining clear performance and reliability targets that become customer-facing product requirements under varied network conditions. They work at the intersection of user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility to guide the engineering organization. The role requires making decisions under uncertainty while owning the roadmap and being judged by the outcomes their teams ship. They partner closely with embedded network features design lead to ensure product capabilities are both technically sound and understandable to customers.

What you'll do

Convert customer needs and partner requirements into a coherent product vision for the dataplane platform that covers clients, relays, and edge infrastructure to make connectivity feel automatic and reliable.

Define clear performance and reliability targets that become customer-facing product requirements so the dataplane can meet operational expectations across varied network conditions.

Translate abstract networking systems into legible, well-structured product capabilities through close collaboration with the embedded network features design lead.

Write product requirements and acceptance criteria that guide engineering, design, and business teams from concept to shipped functionality.

Prioritize the roadmap by balancing user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility while managing uncertainty and tradeoffs.

Define and track measurable service objectives and customer-facing SLOs, operating under real production expectations and managing situations when systems miss those commitments.

Collaborate with cross functional teams to break down complex networking problems into executable work that can be validated through experiments and observability.

Build and maintain deep fluency in networking across the stack, including routing and NAT traversal below L4, as well as MTU/MSS, congestion, latency, and packet loss.

Develop equal fluency at the application layer in overlay routing, proxies and connectors, DNS, and network segmentation to enable peer-level engineering dialogue.

Create and maintain operator control surfaces, the admin console and CLI used by network engineers and IT admins to configure and troubleshoot networks at scale.

Requirements

The posting states a pay range of $263980 to $1500.

Ten-plus years in product management owning networking, transport, edge, or infrastructure products at scale in CDNs, edge platforms, SD-WAN, overlay networks, cloud networking, service mesh, API gateways, DNS/traffic management, or identity-aware proxies are required.

Deep networking fluency across the stack is required, including routing and NAT traversal below L4, as well as MTU/MSS, congestion, latency, and packet loss, with equal fluency at the application layer in overlay routing, proxies and connectors, DNS, and network segmentation to enable peer-level engineering dialogue.

The capability to define performance commitments and customer-facing SLOs, operate under real production expectations, and manage situations when systems miss those commitments is required.

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.

Nice to have

Familiarity with VPN/tunneling protocols such as WireGuard, IPsec, OpenVPN, or low-level networking stacks including kernel, eBPF, and userspace.

Experience operating globally distributed infrastructure POPs, relays, and edge nodes, including capacity planning, regional expansion, and customer-visible performance tradeoffs.

Familiarity with subnet routing, BGP, MPLS, cloud VPC peering, or data residency constraints.

Experience with application-layer connectivity, including service mesh, API gateways, DNS, proxies/connectors, or network segmentation and policy.

A track record building operator control surfaces the admin console and CLI used by network engineers and IT admins to configure and troubleshoot networks at scale.

A background in regulated industries such as finance, healthcare, or government.

Public technical writing, conference talks, or open-source networking contributions.

Hands-on experience with Tailscale at work or home.
