About the role
Stratolaunch is a technology innovator focused on developing practical testing solutions for hypersonic flight. Our reusable Talon testbeds provide essential data for validating aerospace systems and accelerating technology deployment. In this position, you will be responsible for machining components and collaborating with engineers to ensure precision and quality in prototype parts.

What you'll do
- Manufacture components according to specific designs using various machine tools, including lathes, mills, and grinders.
- Collaborate with engineers and shop personnel to establish effective machining processes and sequences.
- Set up, operate, and inspect all machine tools to ensure precision in manufacturing.
- Monitor machinery operations to identify and address any mechanical issues, performing maintenance as required.
- Utilize knowledge of materials and machining techniques to produce high-quality parts while adhering to safety protocols.
- Interpret engineering drawings and work instructions accurately.
- Assist in composite fabrication and support aircraft or launch vehicle systems when not engaged in machining tasks.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Strong communication abilities.
- Solid background in mechanics and metallurgy.
- Competency in reading blueprints and understanding GD&T.
- Experience with precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software and machining centers is advantageous.
- Proficient in operating manual machines.
- Ability to manufacture parts with tight tolerances.
- Experience in designing parts and fixtures.
- Capable of working effectively within a team and independently.
- Quick adaptability to changing priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to plan and execute machining operations.
- Commitment to safe practices with all equipment.
- Must be able to stand for long periods, at least 8 hours.
- Physically capable of lifting items weighing up to 50 lbs.
Education & Experience
- Machinist II: Minimum of 5 years of experience in the aerospace sector or a related field.
- Experience with various materials, including aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and Inconel.
- Knowledge of CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX.
- Familiarity with CAM software like Mastercam or NX.
- Strong mechanical and metallurgical knowledge.
- Proficient in blueprint reading and GD&T.
- Skilled in using precision measuring tools.
- Experience in programming CAD/CAM systems is a plus.
- Capable of designing parts and fixtures.
- Ability to plan and execute a sequence of operations.
- Must adhere to safe operating procedures with all shop equipment.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods - 8 hours minimum.
- Physically able to handle items weighing up to 50 lbs.
Practical notes
This position is based in Mojave, CA.
Base salary and leveling are determined on an individual basis, taking into account factors such as location, education, and a thorough evaluation of skills and experience during the interview process.
