About the role
Stepful is seeking qualified virtual educators to facilitate synchronous didactic coursework for its Board of Nursing approved Practical Nursing program operating in Ohio. This contract engagement centers on delivering live online instruction designed to equip students for licensure examinations and clinical practice readiness. The position functions primarily as a substitute instructor for active student cohorts, with a strong possibility of transitioning to lead instructor responsibilities for future program launches as the organization scales. Candidates will join the Learning team to uphold educational standards in a fully remote capacity.

What you'll do
- Conduct live, virtual didactic sessions utilizing the Stepful learning management system to deliver curriculum content to Practical Nursing students.
- Present complex nursing concepts clearly, address student inquiries in real-time, and provide consistent, actionable feedback on academic performance.
- Function as a primary subject matter expert for practical nursing education, ensuring all instruction aligns with current clinical standards and Board of Nursing requirements.
- Cultivate and maintain an encouraging, structured, and effective virtual classroom environment that promotes student engagement and retention.
- Monitor student progress closely, identifying at-risk learners early and implementing intervention strategies in coordination with the academic support team.
- Adapt lesson plans and instructional pacing based on cohort comprehension levels while maintaining alignment with the approved program syllabus and timeline.
- Collaborate with curriculum developers and lead faculty to refine instructional materials, assessment tools, and simulation prep resources.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of attendance, grading records, and student communications within the designated platform.
- Participate in mandatory faculty development sessions, calibration meetings, and onboarding training to maintain instructional consistency across the program.
- Uphold all institutional policies regarding academic integrity, student privacy (FERPA), and professional conduct in a digital learning environment.
- Provide substitute coverage on short notice for scheduled sessions, requiring high reliability and schedule flexibility during designated teaching windows.
- Support students in developing critical thinking and clinical judgment skills necessary for success on the NCLEX-PN and in entry-level practice.
Requirements
- Possession of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited institution.
- Hold an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
- Minimum of two years of experience serving as faculty within an LPN or RN educational program, demonstrating direct instructional responsibility.
- Minimum of two years of professional practice experience as a Registered Nurse in a clinical setting.
- Minimum of five years of total varied nursing experience encompassing clinical practice, administration, or education roles.
- Availability to work Monday through Thursday during designated evening time blocks, specifically 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM EST or 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM EST.
- Demonstrated proficiency with learning management systems and virtual classroom technology (Zoom, LMS navigation, digital whiteboarding).
- Ability to pass a background check and comply with all clinical affiliation agreement requirements for faculty.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills tailored to adult learners in a synchronous online format.

Nice to have
- Prior experience teaching in a hybrid or fully online nursing program using synchronous delivery methods.
- Certification as a Nurse Educator (CNE) or progress toward advanced educator credentials.
- Familiarity with NCLEX-PN test plan blueprints and item writing for licensure-style assessments.
- Background in curriculum mapping, program accreditation processes (ACEN, NLN CNEA), or regulatory compliance.
- Experience mentoring or precepting novice nurses or nursing students in clinical or lab settings.
- Proficiency with educational technology stacks including simulation platforms, virtual reality clinical tools, or adaptive learning software.

Practical notes
The interview process consists of an introductory call with the talent acquisition team, a practical case study assignment relevant to nursing instruction, and a final interview with hiring leadership. This is a 1099 independent contractor position; therefore, hours fluctuate based on course scheduling, cohort enrollment, and substitute demand, with no guarantee of minimum weekly hours. Instructors are responsible for their own tax withholdings, benefits, and equipment provisioning (reliable high-speed internet, webcam, headset, quiet workspace).
