Job description
About the role
We are seeking an Intern Embedded C/C++ Engineer to contribute to our battery- and line-powered camera solutions for the home security market. You will translate product requirements into reliable embedded C++ code under guidance, focusing on product quality, reliability, and seamless cross-platform compatibility. This 6-month gig-contract role is based in Kyiv and offers opportunities to deepen your knowledge of connectivity, power budgeting, data protocols, RTOS, security standards, and product reliability within a globally distributed, collaborative team.
What you'll do
- Assist in the development of product features by writing, debugging, and validating embedded C++ code on hardware to ensure feature correctness and reliability.
- Learn to navigate and understand the existing codebase efficiently, identifying component interactions and dependencies within the firmware architecture.
- Gain a deep understanding of subsystem operations and their interconnections, including power management, connectivity modules, and sensor interfaces.
- Participate in technical discussions, team meetings, and code reviews to align implementation with product goals and quality standards.
- Support code validation on physical hardware platforms, assist with data mining, investigate technical issues, and prepare documentation for debugging and validation procedures.
- Maintain proactive communication with colleagues while solving technical challenges, ensuring alignment across firmware, QA, and product teams.
- Learn to complete tasks independently over time and respond promptly to constructive feedback to improve code quality and implementation accuracy.
- Collaborate closely with QA teams to investigate and resolve firmware-related issues, prioritizing the end-user experience and product reliability.
- Explore connectivity protocols, power budgeting strategies, and data protocols relevant to camera devices, including I2C, SPI, UART, and networking stacks.
- Gain practical experience with RTOS concepts and security standards that apply to embedded environments, ensuring robust and secure firmware behavior.
- Utilize version control and build automation tools such as Makefile and CMake within the development workflow to manage code changes and builds.
- Apply fundamental networking concepts including PHY layers and upper OSI layers for Wi-Fi and Ethernet in the context of camera system connectivity.
- Assist in debugging and refining firmware to ensure high product reliability, performance, and compliance with operational specifications.
- Support the team in generating reliable releases through testing, validation, and documentation activities, contributing to sustainable and repeatable release processes.
- Prepare detailed technical documentation that clarifies troubleshooting steps, configurations, test results, and subsystem interactions for knowledge sharing.
- Engage in knowledge-sharing activities within the globally distributed team, contributing to continuous improvement and mutual skill development.
Requirements
- You must possess basic practical experience in embedded development using C/C++ for microcontroller-based devices, with demonstrated ability to write and debug firmware.
- You must demonstrate a strong grasp of Object-Oriented Programming principles and apply them in practice to embedded software design.
- You must have a fundamental understanding of microcontroller architecture and its influence on software design, including memory and peripheral constraints.
- You must have experience programming hardware data interfaces such as I2C, SPI, and UART, including protocol implementation and debugging.
- You must be familiar with build automation tools including Makefile and CMake in real projects, using them to manage compilation and linking processes.
- You must have a basic understanding of networking fundamentals covering PHY layers and upper OSI layers, with application to Wi‑Fi and Ethernet implementations.
- You must conceptually understand power budgeting techniques for battery-operated devices and their trade-offs, especially in camera systems.
- You must show good data analysis, logical reasoning, and troubleshooting skills during technical investigations, using evidence-based approaches.
- You must achieve at least an Intermediate level in both written and spoken English (B1) to communicate effectively with distributed team members.
- You must be able to work within a structured development process that emphasizes product quality, reliability, and cross-platform compatibility.
- You must be willing to learn and apply security standards relevant to embedded environments as part of firmware implementation and validation.
