SpaceXAI is building AI systems to map the universe and advance human knowledge. We are seeking a hands-on leader to manage the installation, testing, and handover of mechanical infrastructure for our high-performance data centers. The Mechanical Commissioning Lead will own the end-to-end mechanical validation process, ensuring that critical systems are installed correctly and perform to design intent before operations acceptance. This role requires a disciplined professional who can translate complex design documents into executable test plans and verify compliance with stringent industry standards. You will be responsible for aligning the efforts of multiple trades to achieve synchronized system startup and performance verification. The ideal candidate will mentor junior staff while maintaining a sharp focus on safety, schedule, and technical accuracy. You will act as the primary technical authority for mechanical systems during commissioning, resolving issues in real time to keep projects moving forward. This position is fundamental to de-risking our facilities and guaranteeing that the mechanical infrastructure supports the compute mission.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Execute commissioning for HVAC systems, chillers, cooling towers, CRAC/CRAH units, pumps, heat exchangers, and hydronic loops to verify performance.
- Develop and implement test scripts, checklists, and procedures that align with project specifications and owner expectations.
- Supervise and mentor a team of commissioning technicians, providing guidance, quality checks, and performance feedback.
- Conduct airflow and water flow verification, system balancing, and diagnostic testing to confirm systems operate within design parameters.
- Resolve mechanical, pneumatic, and controls issues that arise during startup and stabilization phases.
- Coordinate closely with EPC contractors, equipment vendors, and design engineers to facilitate system energization and troubleshooting.
- Perform safety checks and enforce protocols including Lockout Tagout (LOTO), NFPA standards, and OSHA requirements on every site visit.
- Create, review, and approve commissioning documentation, including as-built drawings, issue logs, and readiness reports.
- Manage project schedules, track punch-list items, and drive resolution to close out mechanical scopes of work.
- Participate in design feedback sessions to identify constructability concerns and improve installation methods.
- Conduct training sessions for operations and maintenance teams to ensure smooth handover and facility ownership.
- Validate that all mechanical systems meet Uptime Institute and industry best practices for reliability and efficiency.
- Utilize advanced test equipment such as manometers, anemometers, ultrasonic flow meters, and pressure calibrators to gather precise data.
- Oversee the completion of test reports and deliverables required for final project turnover and operational acceptance.
Requirements
- Possess a minimum of 7 years of hands-on mechanical commissioning experience within data centers, power plants, or semiconductor facilities.
- Hold a minimum of 3 years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity managing commissioning activities and technicians.
- Demonstrate expert-level knowledge of large-scale cooling systems, including industrial chillers, cooling towers, and high-density liquid cooling configurations.
- Show proficiency in the use of precision test equipment, including manometers, anemometers, ultrasonic flow meters, and pressure calibrators.
- Exhibit thorough understanding of ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, ASME, IMC, LEED, and Uptime Institute standards as they apply to mechanical systems.
- Ability to read, interpret, and redline mechanical drawings, P&ID diagrams, and control schematics to verify installation accuracy.
- Hold a current OSHA 30 certification and maintain strict compliance with safety regulations on all projects.
- Demonstrate the ability to travel extensively and work nights or weekends to meet project demands and commissioning windows.
Nice to have
- Direct experience with hyperscale data center projects rated at 100 MW or greater in capacity.
- Possession of NEBB, AABC, or equivalent TAB certification demonstrating advanced commissioning competence.
- Familiarity with BMS/BAS controls integration, including protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, or LON.
- Prior involvement with direct liquid cooling and refrigerant-based cooling systems in high-density environments.
- Proficiency with construction management software such as CxPro, Procore, or PlanGrid for documentation and scheduling.
