Equipment Maintenance & Reliability Engineer, PCB
Job description
About the role
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. This role is focused on Starlink, the world's largest satellite constellation and the world's most advanced broadband internet system, which is providing fast, reliable internet to 10M+ users worldwide. The engineer in this position will own the reliability and sustainability of critical production assets in a high-rate manufacturing environment. You will act as the primary engineering authority for equipment performance, driving design improvements and execution of maintenance strategies. This position requires collaboration across engineering, production, and technical teams to solve complex operational challenges. You will be accountable for minimizing unplanned downtime and ensuring that asset performance supports aggressive production goals.
Key facts
What you'll do
Analyze and manage asset reliability risks that could disrupt factory or business operations across Starlink production lines.
Guide cross-functional efforts to ensure consistency, maintainability, and serviceability of critical equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls, and safety and security systems.
Own the development of equipment improvement plans to create more responsive preventative maintenance strategies, increase equipment effectiveness, and minimize production downtime.
Define, design, develop, monitor, and refine an asset maintenance plan that incorporates value-added preventive maintenance tasks, minimizes high-cost low-value repairs, and leverages predictive and other non-destructive testing methodologies.
Prepare comprehensive asset documentation packages for review of system mechanical design, controls architecture, and software integration.
Develop engineering solutions to repetitive failures and equipment-specific problems that adversely affect plant operations including capacity, quality, cost, or regulatory compliance issues.
Work with production teams to perform in-depth analyses of assets including asset utilization rate, overall equipment effectiveness, remaining useful life, operational restrictions, and other parameters that define operating condition, reliability, and costs.
Provide technical support to production, maintenance management, and technical personnel to ensure rapid response to equipment issues and continuous improvement.
Manage production requests related to asset improvement, control functions, and data collection to ensure timely execution and measurable outcomes.
Apply value analysis techniques to inform repair/replace, repair/redesign, and make/buy decisions for critical production assets.
Evaluate emerging technologies and methods to enhance maintainability, reduce lifecycle costs, and support scalability as production rates increase.
Partner with project engineering teams to ensure the reliability and sustainability of new and modified installations in the manufacturing environment.
Champion data-driven decision-making by analyzing equipment performance metrics to guide maintenance strategies and investment priorities.
Ensure compliance with internal standards, safety requirements, and regulatory obligations related to equipment reliability and performance.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, systems, or manufacturing engineering is required as a baseline qualification for this role.
1+ years of experience in an engineering role in manufacturing, integration, reliability, technical program management, and/or operations is mandatory for this position.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-priority production environment while managing multiple concurrent engineering tasks.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required to coordinate with technical teams, production staff, and leadership stakeholders.
Proficiency with engineering tools, including but not limited to diagnostic equipment, data analysis software, and enterprise asset management systems.
Ability to read and understand equipment schematics, OEM manuals, and technical documentation to execute maintenance and reliability activities.
Commitment to following established procedures while applying critical thinking to drive continuous improvement in maintenance processes.
Capability to perform routine analysis using probability and statistical tools to evaluate equipment performance and reliability trends.
Nice to have
Advanced degrees in engineering with reliability analysis experience through research and/or internships.
2+ years of experience in a maintenance engineering role and reliability in a high-volume manufacturing, testing, or operational environment.
Hands-on experience with equipment control systems, machinery, and industrial automation.
Developed understanding of mechanical, fluid, and electrical components.
Experience in using probability and statistical tools and methods to model equipment behavior and predict failures.
Demonstrates critical thinking and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail.
Detail-oriented approach to analyzing complex systems and documenting engineering solutions.
