SpaceX is seeking an Environmental & Materials Compliance Engineer to join the team focused on Starlink's hardware products for both consumer and enterprise markets. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for managing all material and environmental compliance obligations that facilitate the global distribution of millions of units. This position requires a proactive approach and collaboration with various technical teams to ensure that Starlink hardware adheres to compliance standards across different regions.

What you'll do

• Formulate and implement a comprehensive material compliance strategy for Starlink hardware, which includes managing Full Material Declarations, analyzing bills of materials, and overseeing supply chain data integrity.
• Lead compliance initiatives for various global environmental regulations such as RoHS, REACH, WEEE, and Proposition 65.
• Manage material data systems while coordinating the collection and verification of data from suppliers.
• Assess new components and materials for potential compliance risks, offering informed guidance to design, sourcing, and manufacturing teams.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation and regulatory files that meet environmental requirements across different markets.
• Stay informed about emerging regulations and translate them into actionable internal requirements for Starlink products.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that compliance considerations are integrated into product design and development processes.
• Conduct training sessions for internal teams on compliance requirements and best practices to foster a culture of compliance within the organization.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, materials science, environmental science, chemistry, or a related STEM discipline.
• At least one year of experience in materials and environmental compliance within high-volume consumer electronics, industrial equipment, or IT equipment sectors (internship experience is acceptable).
• A flexible attitude with a willingness to work extended hours or weekends when necessary to meet critical deadlines.
• Strong analytical skills to evaluate compliance data and make informed decisions.
• Excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex compliance information to diverse audiences.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.

Nice to have

• Over three years of direct experience in materials and environmental compliance specifically within high-volume electronics, such as consumer electronics, IT, or automotive sectors.
• In-depth knowledge of RoHS, REACH, WEEE, and Full Material Declaration processes.
• Hands-on experience with material data management systems and large-scale supplier data collection efforts.
• Familiarity with environmental regulations in key markets including the EU, US, UK, and China.
• Experience conducting compliance risk assessments for intricate bills of materials.
• Proficient technical writing and documentation skills to create clear and concise compliance reports.
• Proven ability to influence and collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Design, New Product Introduction (NPI), Sourcing, and Manufacturing without direct reporting authority.

Skills & tools

• Expertise in Full Material Declaration processes and methodologies.
• Proficiency in material data management systems and tools.
• Strong skills in analyzing bills of materials (BOM).
• Familiarity with regulatory frameworks including RoHS, REACH, WEEE, and Proposition 65.
• Experience in validating supplier data and ensuring accuracy in compliance reporting.
• Competence in creating and maintaining technical documentation related to compliance standards.

• This position is subject to ITAR restrictions: candidates must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents (green card holders), refugees under 8 U.S.C. 1157, asylees under 8 U.S.C. 1158, or must be eligible to obtain the necessary authorization from the U.S. Department of State.
