About the role
This position focuses on the design and implementation of automated systems for the Starship production line. You will work directly with hardware and software to build the machinery required to manufacture our reusable launch vehicles. The role requires a hands-on engineer who can translate high-level manufacturing requirements into robust and scalable control solutions. You will be responsible for ensuring that automated equipment meets strict quality, safety, and production targets. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential to integrate mechanical, electrical, and software components. Your work will directly impact the throughput and reliability of the production system. This is a critical role in advancing the future of spaceflight manufacturing.

What you'll do
- Design equipment concepts while balancing product specs, process needs, layout, costs, and timelines.
- Create electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics while ensuring compliance with NFPA79, NEC, and UL508A standards.
- Develop, document, and maintain structured PLC code for manufacturing systems.
- Build and integrate robotic systems for sub-component manufacturing.
- Implement safety systems for robots and gantries that meet ANSI/RIA15.06 and OSHA requirements.
- Design HMI interfaces that provide clear feedback for machine troubleshooting.
- Manage the physical assembly of electrical cabinets, field wiring, and fluid plumbing.
- Select and size electromechanical components like servo motors.
- Oversee the deployment of automated equipment into the production environment.
- Manage project budgets and schedules to ensure timely completion.
- Conduct factory acceptance testing and site commissioning of automated machinery.
- Analyze production data to optimize equipment performance and uptime.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance manufacturing efficiency.
- Document all systems architecture and procedures for knowledge transfer.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in physics, computer science, or an engineering field.
- 5+ years of professional experience designing and commissioning industrial automation and control systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong understanding of industrial safety standards and machine safeguarding principles.
- Proven experience with electrical, pneumatic, and fluid system design.
- Ability to interpret mechanical layouts and technical drawings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-team collaboration.
- Willingness to adhere to strict quality control and documentation protocols.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize based on project needs.
- Compliance with ITAR regulations is mandatory for this role.
Nice to have
- Experience with electromechanical or mechatronic system integration.
- Proficiency in robotic welding applications using Kuka, ABB, or Fanuc.
- Background in PLC and robot simulation.
- Experience with National Instruments hardware and software.
- CAD skills for electrical schematics using EPlan.
- Programming proficiency in Python, C#, .NET, or SQL.
- Experience with Siemens TIA Portal or Beckhoff TwinCat 3.
- Familiarity with SCADA and HMI programming.
- Knowledge of serial, Ethernet, and field bus communication networks.
- Experience with production equipment like vision systems, laser sensors, dispense systems, and nut-runners.
Practical notes

Compensation: $130,000 to $180,000 per year.
