About the role
SpaceX is on a mission to revolutionize global internet access through its Starlink satellite constellation, which aims to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband services to underserved and remote areas. The Automation & Controls team plays a crucial role in this endeavor by designing and implementing the automated systems that drive production efficiency. In this dynamic and hands-on role, you will work closely with engineers to integrate, commission, and continuously improve electromechanical equipment, ensuring that the manufacturing processes for Starlink operate smoothly and safely.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Collaborate with engineering teams to assemble and activate electromechanical production systems using a variety of tools and machinery.
- Innovate and enhance automation solutions for manufacturing lines to meet and exceed production goals.
- Analyze and annotate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics at the system level to ensure clarity and accuracy.
- Build industrial control panels that comply with NFPA 79 and UL 508A standards, ensuring safety and reliability.
- Develop, deploy, and commission PLC and HMI software to optimize production processes.
- Source and procure components, sensors, and hardware necessary for effective control system implementations.
- Oversee the automation lab by maintaining workflow standards, safety measures, cleanliness, and inventory management of supplies and equipment.
- Implement 5S principles to maintain an organized and efficient workspace.
- Suggest innovative alternatives and challenge conventional methods to further the team's objectives and improve overall performance.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in automation within a manufacturing or production environment.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems.
- Ability to obtain forklift certification as part of the role.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 25 lbs. without assistance.
- Physically fit to perform tasks that include lifting, standing, climbing, bending, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying as needed.
- Willingness to work overtime and weekends when necessary to meet critical project deadlines.
Nice to have
- Demonstrated hands-on troubleshooting and fault-finding skills in mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, and UL 508A.
- Experience in PLC and HMI programming using ladder logic or structured text in platforms like Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens TIA Portal, or Allen-Bradley RSLogix.
- Proficiency in creating electrical and pneumatic schematics using tools like EPLAN Electrical/Fluid, Visio, or similar software.
- Background in designing, constructing, and wiring electrical control panels.
- Competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for documentation and presentations.
- Strong analytical skills for data gathering and problem-solving.
- Ability to maintain a safe and clean working environment in accordance with company policies and industry standards.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication abilities.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in PLC platforms such as Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens TIA Portal, and Allen-Bradley RSLogix.
- Experience in HMI development and programming.
- Knowledge of ladder logic and structured text programming.
- Familiarity with EPLAN Electrical/Fluid and Visio for schematic design.
- Expertise in constructing industrial control panels according to NFPA 79 and UL 508A guidelines.
- Understanding of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic system schematics.
- Proficient in using the Microsoft Office suite for documentation and reporting.
