What you'll do
- Review and analyze mortgage applications, including credit reports, income documentation, and asset statements, to determine eligibility for loan approval.
- Assess borrower creditworthiness by evaluating credit history, debt-to-income ratios, and overall financial stability.

- Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in mortgage underwriting to enhance your knowledge and skills.
- Participate in training sessions and workshops to continuously improve underwriting techniques and methodologies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including risk management and compliance, to ensure alignment with SoFi's overall business objectives.
- Assist in developing and refining underwriting policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness within the team.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior underwriters, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field is preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in mortgage underwriting or a similar role within the financial services industry.
- Strong understanding of mortgage products, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficient in using underwriting software and tools, with a solid grasp of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail, enabling accurate assessment of financial documents.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively interact with clients and team members.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Familiarity with risk assessment and management principles in the context of mortgage lending.
Nice to have
- Certification as a Mortgage Underwriter (e.g., from the Mortgage Bankers Association) is a plus.
- Experience with automated underwriting systems (AUS) such as Fannie Mae's Desktop Underwriter or Freddie Mac's Loan Product Advisor.
- Knowledge of various loan types, including conventional, FHA, VA, and jumbo loans.
