Backend Software Engineer (Python
Job description
About the role
You will architect and maintain core backend services in Python that power Scaleway's sovereign cloud infrastructure and internal operations. You will own the design, implementation, and reliability of software components that bridge high-level application logic with low-level hardware constraints. You will collaborate closely with hardware engineers and product teams to ensure software aligns with infrastructure capabilities and business goals. You will drive the development of scalable, maintainable, and secure solutions across our HDV and QCS initiatives. You will contribute to a diverse codebase that spans from data collection daemons to customer-facing APIs. You will champion best practices in testing, code reviews, and clean architecture within a fast-moving agile environment. You will help define and execute the technical roadmap for critical backend services that enable next-generation cloud offerings.
Key facts
What you'll do
Develop and maintain scalable backend services in Python to support hardware update, testing, and inventory workflows.
Design and implement robust APIs and data pipelines that connect low-level hardware telemetry with high-level application features.
Own and evolve internal tools and SaaS platforms used by operations and engineering teams to manage physical infrastructure.
Collaborate with frontend engineers to deliver responsive and intuitive administrative interfaces using React and TypeScript.
Implement Infrastructure as Code solutions with Terraform and Ansible to automate the provisioning and management of Proxmox clusters.
Optimize, refactor, and test large volumes of existing code to ensure long-term stability during extended hardware validation campaigns.
Integrate systems across heterogeneous environments, bridging system-level data collection with modern web service layers.
Participate actively in Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives to drive continuous improvement.
Contribute to architectural decisions that shape the next generation of Scaleway's sovereign cloud infrastructure.
Champion engineering excellence through peer code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing across the team and organization.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field or demonstrate equivalent practical experience.
You must have at least 4 years of professional experience developing structured application code in Python.
You must be proficient in writing clean, well-tested Python code with a strong understanding of software design patterns and API contract design.
You must have demonstrable experience with version control systems, particularly Git, and be comfortable working in a collaborative source code environment.
You must understand core networking concepts, including TCP/IP, HTTP, and common transport protocols used in distributed systems.
You must be comfortable working in a Linux-based environment, with strong command-line skills and familiarity with common shell tools.
You must be able to write and maintain automated tests, ensuring reliability and correctness of backend services over long runtime cycles.
You must be fluent in English, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with an international team.
Nice to have
Experience building highly responsive user interfaces with React and TypeScript, including state management and data-fetching patterns.
Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible for automating virtualized cluster management.
Familiarity with containerization and orchestration platforms, particularly Docker and Kubernetes, for deploying and managing backend services.
Solid foundations in Linux system administration, networking protocols such as VLANs and routing, and bare-metal provisioning workflows.
Experience with configuration management and automation frameworks used in large-scale data center operations.
Hands-on experience interacting with physical hardware or hardware labs, including sensor interfaces, BMC/IPMI, or low-level telemetry systems.
Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines to support continuous delivery in complex infrastructure environments.
Understanding of data center operations, inventory systems, and hardware lifecycle management processes.
