Roblox is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to enhance the performance of its applications across various platforms. This role is crucial as Roblox serves over 150 million users daily, and the engineer will work primarily with the cross-platform C++ game engine code. The position involves collaborating with multiple teams to identify performance bottlenecks and implement measurable improvements while ensuring stability and efficiency across devices.

What you'll do
- Take ownership of the overall performance metrics of the Roblox client across all platforms, focusing on key indicators such as Time to Interactive (TTI), application size, and battery consumption.
- Design and implement benchmarking, profiling, and telemetry systems to detect performance regressions early and facilitate the ongoing scaling of the application.
- Work closely with engineering, product, and design teams to assess technical trade-offs, align on priorities, and execute effective rollout strategies.
- Dive into complex and unfamiliar codebases to drive significant technical improvements, transforming ambitious projects from initial concepts to production-ready solutions.
- Mentor fellow engineers on best practices for performance optimization and code quality.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a seamless user experience across all supported platforms, including Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation.
- Analyze performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement, ensuring the application remains responsive and efficient.
- Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to enhance code quality and team collaboration.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in developing high-quality, efficient C++ code within large and complex codebases.
- Demonstrated experience in creating reliable measurement and monitoring systems to prevent performance regressions.
- Strong ability to navigate and manage complex, ambiguous systems independently while delivering stable, production-grade software.
- Excellent communication skills, enabling effective discussions about technical trade-offs with both engineering colleagues and cross-functional partners.
- Proven problem-solving abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations requiring quick and effective solutions.
- Familiarity with performance optimization techniques and strategies in software development.
Nice to have
- Experience with on-device profiling for iOS and/or Android platforms to identify and measure optimization opportunities.
- Knowledge of game development principles and practices, particularly in relation to performance optimization.
- Familiarity with telemetry and analytics tools to track application performance metrics.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in C++ programming language, with a strong understanding of performance optimization techniques.
- Experience with profiling tools and methodologies for application performance analysis.
- Familiarity with cross-platform development practices and tools.
- Understanding of software development lifecycle and agile methodologies.
- Knowledge of version control systems, particularly Git.
Practical notes
This position is based at Roblox's headquarters in San Mateo, California. The starting salary for this role ranges from $195,780 to $242,100 USD, depending on various job-related factors such as experience, training, and market demand. Employees are expected to work onsite from Tuesday to Thursday, with optional attendance on Mondays and Fridays. All full-time employees are eligible for equity compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.
