About the role
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Engine DataModel team at Roblox, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the foundational components that support our platform. This position is based in San Mateo, CA, and operates under a hybrid work model, requiring in-office attendance three days a week. Your contributions will directly impact the performance and functionality of user-generated games, ensuring a seamless experience across various devices. You will collaborate closely with other teams to develop universal solutions and take ownership of projects from inception to completion.

What you'll do
- Design and implement high-performance engine code that enhances the experience of all user-created games on the Roblox platform.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build core systems and data structures that optimize the Roblox engine's performance.
- Take full ownership of projects, managing them through all stages of their lifecycle, from conception to deployment.
- Ensure that the engine code runs efficiently across all supported devices, including desktop, mobile, and console platforms.
- Develop and maintain the core structures and systems that facilitate interaction with the DataModel.
- Create and refine C++ reflection bindings that form the Luau API surface, enabling creators to engage with the DataModel effectively.
- Utilize custom code generation tools to streamline the development of C++ reflection bindings and related structures.
- Implement robust DataModel serialization processes to enhance data management within the engine.
- Stay current with industry trends and technological advancements to continuously improve the engine's capabilities.
- Troubleshoot and resolve performance issues, ensuring optimal functionality across diverse gaming experiences.
- Mentor junior engineers, sharing knowledge and best practices to foster a collaborative learning environment.
- Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to enhance code quality and team performance.
Requirements
- Proven experience in systems-level programming with a strong focus on C++.
- Familiarity with game engine internals and the complexities involved in their development.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain systems that operate efficiently and effectively.
- A genuine curiosity about technology, particularly regarding CPU operations and memory management techniques.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to tackle complex technical challenges.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
- A proactive approach to learning and adapting to new technologies and methodologies in software development.
Nice to have
- Experience with game development frameworks or engines beyond Roblox.
- Knowledge of scripting languages, particularly Luau, and their integration with C++.
- Familiarity with performance profiling and optimization techniques in software engineering.

Practical notes
The starting salary for this position ranges from $242,100 to $293,800 USD, depending on various factors such as experience, qualifications, and market demand. This range is subject to change and may be adjusted in the future.
