Senior Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
Roblox is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Release Engineering team, where you will be instrumental in building and maintaining the infrastructure that enables hundreds of engineers to deploy code safely to a platform serving tens of millions of concurrent players. This position sits at the intersection of developer tooling and production reliability, giving you direct influence over how quickly and confidently teams can ship high-impact features across every device that runs Roblox. You will work on backend services, automation systems, and C++ engine code to improve the entire release and experimentation pipeline. The role offers a unique opportunity to solve complex technical challenges at massive scale while directly impacting the experience of both internal engineering teams and the global Roblox player community. If you thrive in environments where your work on developer-facing infrastructure has immediate and measurable effects on end-user reliability, this position will be an excellent fit.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and implement backend services and automation frameworks that power the entire release and experimentation workflow across multiple platforms including desktop, mobile, console, VR, and server environments
- Develop and enhance C++ engine code to improve telemetry reporting capabilities, ensuring accurate and comprehensive data collection for release monitoring and decision-making
- Build and refine feature rollout mechanisms with automatic abort capabilities that can detect issues and halt problematic deployments before they impact the broader player base
- Create progressive rollout systems for both client applications and server infrastructure that enable gradual deployment of changes while minimizing risk exposure
- Design and implement sophisticated regression detection algorithms that can identify performance degradation, bugs, or unexpected behavior during the release process
- Develop automated rollback systems that can quickly revert problematic changes to maintain platform stability during weekly multi-platform releases
- Collaborate directly with engineering teams across the organization to understand their pain points and translate those insights into durable, flexible tooling solutions
- Build safe-by-default infrastructure that empowers teams to ship bold changes quickly while maintaining the reliability expectations of tens of millions of concurrent users
- Extend release functionality to support new platforms, features, and deployment patterns as Roblox continues to grow and evolve
- Instrument and monitor release systems with comprehensive observability practices to ensure visibility into deployment health and performance
- Contribute to the strategic direction of release engineering practices and help establish best practices for the broader engineering organization
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response to ensure the reliability of release infrastructure
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of professional experience building backend services using languages such as C#, Python, TypeScript, or comparable technologies
- Demonstrated familiarity and comfort working with C++ codebases, including the ability to read, modify, and extend existing engine code
- Strong understanding of telemetry instrumentation practices and the ability to implement comprehensive observability solutions
- Experience with monitoring, alerting, and debugging distributed systems in production environments
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline
- Proven ability to design and build systems that operate reliably at scale with millions of users
