Position Overview
Rivet seeks a Display Systems Engineer to join a mission-focused team responsible for defining, executing, and validating the quality of immersive visual experiences. In this capacity, you will architect verification regimes and measurement code that determine whether complex hardware and software integrations meet exacting standards prior to deployment. Your work directly ensures that Rivet's systems deliver reliable, high-fidelity performance for users operating in demanding professional and tactical environments.
Location and Engagement
The preferred location for this role is San Jose, California, with consideration for candidates based in Bellevue, Washington. This is a full-time position.
Compensation and Equity
Base compensation for this role is $192,000 USD on an annual basis. This package may be adjusted based on demonstrated expertise, educational background, and specific technical competencies. Core Responsibilities
You will be the owner of test strategy for a critical segment of our product line. Your daily work will involve designing rigorous validation routines and translating complex optical behaviors into quantifiable metrics. Key duties include:
- Architecting and implementing end-to-end test protocols for head-mounted displays and other immersive devices.
- Executing advanced display calibration using precision instruments such as colorimeters, spectroradiometers, and photometers to ensure visual accuracy.
- Validating stereo vision systems to confirm depth perception, geometric fidelity, and spatial accuracy.
- Developing and deploying motion-to-photon latency measurement solutions utilizing high-speed cameras and synchronized sensors.
- Authoring detailed test procedures, calibration standards, and validation documentation for internal and external consumption.
- Collaborating with optical and mechanical specialists to align hardware specifications with verification goals.
- Evaluating device performance under simulated real-world conditions to ensure robustness across varied operational environments.
- Supplying measurement-driven insights that inform product decisions and support partner organizations.
Required Education and Experience
To qualify for this role, you must present a verified academic credential and a documented track record of execution:
- A Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of five years of professional experience in testing and calibration for optical or display systems.
- A further five years of hands-on experience with augmented reality or virtual reality platforms and immersive display technologies.
Technical Skills
You must demonstrate mastery in at least two of the following domains, with proficiency in a third being highly advantageous:
- Display Technologies: Extensive experience with display calibration using industry-standard metrology tools.
- Optical Systems: A working knowledge of lens behavior, inherent imperfections, and methods for precise optical alignment.
- Camera Calibration: Practical skill with determining intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters and stereo vision configuration.
- Measurement Systems: Familiarity with precision instruments and metrological best practices.
- Programming: Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or C++ for the purpose of automating tests and analyzing complex datasets.
- Latency Testing: Specific experience with high-speed data acquisition and temporal analysis for time-sensitive applications.
Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following attributes will significantly strengthen your application:
- A Master's degree in Optical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
- Prior engagement with commercial AR/VR products, including but not limited to Meta Quest, HoloLens, and Magic Leap.
- Familiarity with international standards bodies such as ISO, IEC, and CIE as they relate to display and optical testing.
- Experience with real-time graphics pipelines and their integration challenges.
- A background in human factors engineering or ergonomics.
- Current certification in metrology or calibration management practices.
