Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
At Rillet, you will drive the implementation of core accounting capabilities that power the financial operations of mid-market and enterprise companies. You translate complex finance requirements into reliable software that delivers impossible speed and accuracy where it matters most. You own the full lifecycle of features, ensuring that systems you build are robust, scalable, and aligned with how customers actually work. You collaborate with finance experts and product thinkers to turn ambiguous problems into clear, executable solutions. You bring a bias for action, shipping high-quality outcomes faster than traditional processes allow. You are expected to challenge the status quo and reimagine how ERP functionality should feel in the AI era. You partner across disciplines to ensure every release reflects both technical excellence and deep respect for accounting realities. This role is based in San Francisco.
What you'll do
- Own features and systems end-to-end across the full stack, from backend architecture to the interfaces users interact with every day.
- Partner with product, design, and finance experts to shape what we build - advocating for the right technical tradeoffs and keeping the customer perspective central.
- Raise the bar for engineering quality through continuous delivery, test-driven development, production reliability, and a culture of ownership.
- Grow the team around you via code reviews, mentorship, and hands-on collaboration that elevates the collective output.
- Navigate ambiguous requirements and define the technical approach needed to deliver impactful capabilities on schedule.
- Design and implement backend services in Kotlin and Spring Boot that handle the scale and correctness required by finance workflows.
- Contribute to a modern frontend using Svelte 5 and TypeScript, ensuring that user interactions are intuitive and responsive.
- Work with PostgreSQL and AWS to build solutions that are performant, observable, and maintainable in production.
- Apply AI-native thinking, using tooling to accelerate execution while still reasoning from first principles.
- Collaborate with certified partners such as EY and KPMG to ensure your work meets enterprise audit and compliance expectations.
- Support the continuous close and real-time finance capabilities that help customers close the books faster and with greater insight.
- Help define and evolve the technical roadmap for the general ledger and related financial systems as the company scales.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record on complex, large-scale projects.
- Strong backend fundamentals and willingness to jump into frontend when needed.
- Comfortable making technical decisions and navigating hard tradeoffs at whatever scope your role demands.
- Strong product instincts - you think about user impact, not just technical correctness.
- Energized by building in a fast-moving environment where the playbook is still being written.
- Based near our New York City or San Francisco offices, or open to relocating and hybrid arrangements.
- Comfortable working with financial data, accuracy requirements, and the pressures of high-stakes reporting.
- Able to write clean, maintainable code that stands up to scrutiny from both engineers and finance professionals.
Nice to have
- Experience in fintech, ERP, or accounting software.
- Hands-on experience with Kotlin, Java, or TypeScript.
- Familiarity with enterprise readiness (SOC 2, SSO/SAML, audit logging, or similar).
Practical notes
Hybrid schedule with team gatherings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus one additional flexible day; some roles may require more office time based on team needs.
