About the role
This position represents a critical entry point into the heart of propulsion development for the Terran R vehicle within the Engine Systems and Test Team. The hired individual will manage the complete lifecycle of propulsion test articles, seamlessly integrating hands-on hardware responsibilities with rigorous system-level analysis and simulation. Success in this role requires balancing meticulous execution with the analytical flexibility to adapt to evolving test objectives. You will own the planning and execution of entire test campaigns, ensuring that hardware readiness aligns with vehicle development timelines. This role provides direct exposure to the full spectrum of rocket propulsion testing, from concept definition through hotfire execution and data review. You will collaborate closely with propulsion analysts, mechanical designers, and test technicians to validate subsystem performance and resolve issues early. The position is foundational to building the operational discipline and test infrastructure necessary for future Relativity missions.

What you'll do
- Act as the primary owner for propulsion test articles, including planning and executing test campaigns from initial checklist development through final reporting.
- Conduct hotfire tests, troubleshoot hardware behavior in real time, and perform in-depth data reviews to correlate test results with expected performance.
- Write test sequences, design necessary tooling, and write code to support operations, ensuring that automated systems are reliable and safe.
- Analyze engine subsystems, perform trade studies, and investigate product issues to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Support stage test and flight campaigns, including defining concepts of operations, preparing test documentation, and sitting console during launch and test windows.
- Develop and lead internal projects aimed at improving team efficiency, standardizing procedures, and enhancing data reporting capabilities.
- Partner with manufacturing and quality teams to ensure test articles meet specifications and are cleared for hardware acceptance.
- Utilize thermodynamics and fluid mechanics fundamentals to evaluate test data and validate simulation models against physical results.
- Maintain detailed records of test procedures, observations, and outcomes to support continuous improvement and knowledge retention.
- Communicate test status, risks, and results clearly and effectively to both technical teams and cross-functional stakeholders.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor degree in a STEM field such as mechanical, aerospace, or chemical engineering.
- Possess prior internship or research lab experience involving complex engineering system development or testing.
- Demonstrate proficiency in applying thermodynamics and fluid mechanics fundamentals to real-world propulsion problems.
- Show the ability to manage high-ownership projects under tight schedules while maintaining attention to detail.
- Exhibit willingness to work rotating 1st and 2nd shifts to support test operations as needed.
- Demonstrate ability to travel approximately 25% of the time to test and launch sites for campaign support.
- Be available for occasional weekend work during critical milestones to ensure test campaigns stay on schedule.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills to document processes and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Have a strong commitment to safety and compliance, adhering to all test stand procedures and company standards.
- Be able to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and test procedures to execute tasks accurately.

- Practical experience in test operations environments, including hands-on exposure to test stands, data systems, and checkout procedures.
- Knowledge of combustion devices, instrumentation, heat exchangers, or valves relevant to propulsion system testing.

- Salary range: $90,000 to $136,000 USD.
