About the role
Join our engineering team to contribute directly to the development of our orbital satellite constellation. You will take on significant responsibility and manage projects from initial concept through to final hardware delivery. In this role, you will be expected to own the execution of complex engineering tasks with a high degree of autonomy. You will work closely with senior engineers to translate abstract mission requirements into concrete, manufacturable designs. Your contributions will have a direct impact on the structural integrity and performance of our spacecraft platforms. Key facts
What you'll do
- Analyze structural requirements and translate them into detailed engineering drawings for composite components.
- Design and implement test procedures to validate the mechanical performance of prototype parts under simulated space conditions.
- Manufacture composite parts using hand lay-up, vacuum bagging, and other fabrication techniques to precise specifications.
- Inspect and document every stage of the production process to ensure compliance with strict quality control standards.
- Develop and maintain detailed test rigs that enable rapid evaluation of new materials and construction methods.
- Utilize CAD and simulation software to model load paths, stress distributions, and thermal behaviors before physical prototyping.
- Collaborate with the mechanical team to integrate composite solutions into the broader satellite bus architecture.
- Conduct post-test analysis to interpret failure modes and recommend design improvements for subsequent iterations.
- Support the creation of detailed technical reports and documentation for internal reviews and client updates.
- Streamline manufacturing workflows to reduce build times and material waste without sacrificing engineering rigor.
- Mentor junior team members on best practices for composite tooling and laboratory safety protocols.
- Coordinate with supply chain partners to verify the availability and suitability of critical raw materials.
- Implement data collection strategies during testing to capture high-fidelity performance metrics for future analysis.
- Drive projects from initial concept through to final hardware delivery, ensuring all milestones are met on schedule.
Requirements
- Ability to work on-site in Hawthorne for at least 12 consecutive weeks without interruption.
- Currently enrolled in a degree program related to engineering, with a strong focus on composites or mechanical disciplines.
- Capacity to function as an independent contributor while knowing when to consult the team for guidance on complex issues.
- Experience balancing rapid, scrappy prototyping with the creation of high-quality, complex systems that meet stringent specifications.
- Solid understanding of composite materials, including resins, fibers, and core structures used in aerospace applications.
- Familiarity with industry standards and test methods relevant to space-qualified hardware and structural validation.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records of processes, tests, and material certifications.
- Willingness to adhere to strict safety protocols in a laboratory and manufacturing environment to protect yourself and your team.
Nice to have
- Proficiency with CAD tools commonly used in the aerospace industry for composite part design.
- Basic knowledge of structural analysis software and simulation techniques for mechanical testing.
- Exposure to rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing or CNC machining for tooling and fixtures.
- Understanding of thermal and mechanical testing methods used to qualify space hardware.
- Experience with data acquisition systems and instrumentation used during physical testing campaigns.
- Familiarity with version control practices for engineering documents and design files.
