Senior Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
At Red Badger, the best bit is the team. Having operated for 15+ years and grown to over 100 people, we remain a diverse collective of more than 22 nationalities speaking 17 different languages. Founded by Dave, Cain, and Stu, who retain 100% ownership, we have been consistently profitable and have grown responsibly from the beginning. Based on Old Street in the heart of "tech city," we actively engage with the local community by running meetups such as React London, hosting events for groups like Lua London and Ladies Who Code, and speaking at conferences including Digital Shoreditch and LNUG. This role is based in a hybrid model at our London location.
The role is for a Senior Software Engineer who will own the full lifecycle of digital product delivery within our multidisciplinary teams. You will partner closely with clients and colleagues to design, build, and evolve high-quality software solutions that address core business complexities. You are a polyglot problem solver who relishes tough challenges, digs deeper into known areas, and expands skills across languages, technologies, and practices. You will lead by example, writing production-grade code, inspiring peers, and educating clients. You will proactively shape project direction through technical and non-technical discussions, ensuring solutions align with client vision and goals in a pragmatic and efficient manner, while contributing to the technical excellence and collaborative culture that defines how we deliver value.
What you'll do
- Leverage extensive experience across a wide range of technologies to tackle complex problems and adapt to new languages and frameworks as project needs evolve.
- Choose the right technology for each job, striving for simplicity and maintainability while delivering production-grade codebases.
- Work directly with clients to articulate and design solutions, ensuring we build the right product in the right way through close collaboration.
- Lead by example within cross-functional teams, getting hands-on with code while inspiring peers and educating clients on development practices.
- Contribute to technical discussions that shape the direction of digital product delivery at Red Badger and influence client outcomes.
- Apply modern software delivery practices to work independently and collaboratively on user stories within agile delivery environments.
- Proactively help clients and team members upskill, embedding good development practices within existing, newly formed, or blended cross-functional teams.
- Support the growth of community and industry engagement by speaking at events, hosting meetups, or hosting sessions when relevant opportunities arise.
- Continuously reflect on processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and collaboration across projects and teams.
- Balance hands-on coding with strategic thinking, ensuring solutions meet client goals while maintaining a thoughtful, pragmatic approach to delivery.
Requirements
- Bring 8 or more years of professional software engineering experience, demonstrating a consistent track record of delivering high-quality digital products.
- Show strong proficiency across multiple technologies and an ability to adapt to new languages, frameworks, and tools as project demands change.
- Demonstrate solid experience designing and articulating technical solutions while communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Exhibit a passion for software craftsmanship, writing clean, maintainable code and contributing to discussions that influence product delivery.
- Work comfortably in agile environments, taking ownership of user stories while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary team members.
- Commit to learning and applying modern software delivery practices, including testing, automation, and deployment strategies.
- Contribute to a positive team culture by sharing knowledge, mentoring peers, and supporting the growth of colleagues and clients.
- Align with Red Badger values by taking responsibility, delivering reliably, and engaging thoughtfully with clients and community.
